The following is a list of plant species, (trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, flowers, forbs and others) that are beneficial to wildlife and occur in West Virginia. The species listed below are not totally inclusive of all foods beneficial to wildlife only those most prominently found in scientific literature. Additionally, the distribution and relative abundance of the following species is highly variable from one locality to the next. The following definitions are not strictly botanical by any means, rather they are conveniently used to make plants recognizable to those without formal plant systematics training.

Trees are tall woody plants. Shrubs are bush-like plants that are usually woody. Vines are plants with long creeping stems. Grasses are plants with non-showy flowers and are usually not woody. Flowers are plants with showy flowers (though all plants have some form of flowers for reproduction). Forbs and Others are weeds, legumes and other plants lumped into this category which don't fit well into others.
