When St. Paul told the Thessalonians to be happy at all
times, he was speaking from a heart filled with trust in God. If he were
only speaking from a strictly human perspective, then we would just laugh
at such nonsense, and go on our way. How can anyone possibly be happy at
all times? We would have to either be on drugs all the time, or be so
blind to life that we would be totally unaware of what real life brings. St. Paul was not a motivational speaker who was writing
to just make us feel good about ourselves. Paul's whole life, and way of
looking at things, came from his deep faith in a God who surrounded him
with care and compassion.
To be honest, we have to admit that it is not easy to set our sights on
happiness. There are so many things in all of our lives which have the
power to depress and trouble us if we allow them to. It requires a
conscious effort not to totally focus our attention on those nega
