The Gift of Giving

Most of us are pleased when we receive gifts. But often, we get more pleasure out of giving gifts to others. When we give others our gifts, we are able to say many things to those who are dear to us. Through our gifts we can tell them how much we appreciate them, or how much we cherish their friendship and their love.

Each time we celebrate the Eucharist we participate in an exchange of gifts. We offer the simple gifts of bread and wine to God.  God in turn gives us the gift of his Son, Jesus. And when we offer the bread and the wine, we are offering our lives, our work, our love -- in short, all that we are. We come to the Eucharist as we are, not as we wish we were. We offer ourselves with all of our wounds and our weaknesses. We may feel that we don't really have much to offer to God. People aren't calling us to come to talk to their group about all of the great things we have done. The newspapers don't know we exist. We are not sports' superstars or movie queens. In short, most of us don't have what the world considers worthy of itself. We may think: if I were not here, what difference would it make?

But maybe God is like parents who give life to their children, and whose greatest joy is in being loved in turn by those children. We are God's children. Jesus came to encourage us to never forget that fact. He wants us to act like God's children, loving God and one another. Isn't this the greatest Epiphany gift we can give -- our love?

Let us pray today that each of us will grow radiant knowing that we are deeply loved, and that our love will overflow to all those whose lives we touch day after day.

 Peace,  Father John

More valuable than material gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, is the invaluable gift of our lives.  There is no greater gift than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Archdiocese of Regina -- Visioning for the New Millennium

The Visioning Process begun by the Archdiocese with the Vision Quest 2001 Conference held at Miller High School, Nov. 2-3, 2001 is about to enter a new phase -- grassroots consultation with people in the parishes and community.

What is Vision Quest?  Vision Quest is process of looking ahead to the future of the church at the local and diocesan levels: naming the issues facing the church, naming the problems, seeing the opportunities and strategizing for the future.  At the November conference, Archbishop James Weisgerber challenged participants to "Put out into the deep water" (Luke 5:4).  Like the disciples of Jesus in the boat, we are invited to take risk, to ask new questions, to dream new possibilities--and to delight in the "catch" at the end of the day.

How can I participate?  The key to developing a comprehensive plan for the Archdiocese is gathering information from people throughout the archdiocese.  "The parish is where the Church exists" (Archbishop Weisgerber).  We are encouraged to engage in dialogue with fellow parishioners, with those who do not attend church regularly or have stopped coming to church for whatever reason. Over the next few months we will be engaged in the consultation process through presentations, discussions, and surveys that will seek both concerns and creative ideas for the future.  Parish input is to be gathered by the end of March.

When?  To begin the grassroots process at Holy Cross, there will be an Introductory Presentation on Vision Quest -- Saturday & Sunday, January 12-13, 2002 at all Masses. Dialogue Session I, including the viewing of a video of the presentations by Archbishop Weisgerber, will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gerein Centre.  Further opportunities for participation will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Let your voice be heard! Take advantage of the opportunities to enter into dialogue with
fellow parishioners to explore the hope and promise for the future of the church of Regina
Archdiocese.

For more information or to comment, contact the Parish Facilitator for Vision Quest, Felix Kryzanowski, 761-2927, e-mail: fkryzanowski@acesscomm.ca
