Finding Christ

Having celebrated Christ's birthday a few days ago, the Church is now asking us to consider how we must still search for Christ.  Just as we have to spend time with our friends, and with our marriage partners, if we are to nourish those relationships, so we have to spend time in prayer with Jesus. And even though there are many kinds of prayer, at times we have to put aside our formal prayers and our devotional books, so that we can enter into conversation with Christ. In such a conversation, we can talk freely about what is going on in our lives.  Just as friends share what is happening with each other so that they can grow closer, so we do with Jesus.  We tell him about our joys and our troubles. We bring to him our sorrows and our present problems.
Love is the other favoured place to find Christ. Christ is found in those who love and in those who are loved. He is found in those who love because God is love, and wherever we find love, we find God. And so wherever we find a truly loving person, we should be thankful that Christ has revealed himself to us in that person. But Christ is also there whenever anyone is in need. Our faith is tested every time we see someone who is hungry or sick or alienated. We must not neglect him when we meet him in someone who is in great need.
May our searching and seeking of Christ draw us closer to him and to one another.

Peace, Father John

PASTORAL COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS  DECEMBER, 2000
Our annual joint Pastoral and Finance Council meeting was held on December 12th to discuss and to share important information that will impact our Parish community for the upcoming year, 2001.

A visioning session was held to identify potential candidates for Pastoral Council, Finance Council and for the many committees that are active in our parish community. The process identified nearly 100 names of parishioners as potential leaders and/or committee members for our parish. All individuals have received a letter asking them to condiser how they can share their gifts for the good of our Christian community of Holy Cross. Any other parishioners who did not receive a letter, but are interested in a leadership role or volunteering for a committee, are invited to contact a member of Pastoral Council of the parish office.

Holy Cross has exceeded its parish target of $57,323.00 for the Archdiocesan Appeal. We have only received responses from about 45% of our Holy Cross families (including families who are now registered at Resurrection Parish). We are asking that any families who have not responded please return their intention card so we can complete our records for the Appeal. Remember 80% of the money raised above our target is returned to our parish to fund parish activities, events and programs.

To date Holy Cross parishioners have contributed to the SE Regina Parish (Resurrection Parish) building fund a total $25,488.  A motion was passed that the funds collected to date be forwarded to Resurrection Parish building fund. Any further funds collected over the 2001 to 2004 period will be forwarded to Resurrection Parish on an annual basis. If you recall, Archbishop Mallon, had requested that Holy Cross Parish contribute $20.00 per average attendee per year for 5 years to the new Regina S.E. Parish (Resurrection Parish).

The Alpha Program will begin at Holy Cross Parish on January 22. We are the first Catholic Church in Regina to offer the program.. The 12 ro 13 week course, which is a practical introduction to the Christian faith, will center around a meal that will be prepared and served by various groups and clubs within our parish community.

A balanced budget for 2001 was presented to Pastoral Council. It was discussed and will be presented at our Annual Meeting for ratification and approval. The Annual Meeting along with an appreciation luncheon will be held FEBRUARY 18th. Remember to mark your calendars!

Pastoral Council and Finance Council members wish to thank all members of the Holy Cross Parish community for your support, dedication and volunteering spirit in the Jubilee Year 2000. We hope you had a very blessed Christmas Season and we wish each of you the best for a joyful and peace filled New Year.

ECUMENISM

NEW APPROACH TO HEALING OLD WOUNDS
Want to warm your January and join with others in understanding the events that were taking place in the world around the time of the English and Protestant Reformations and the earlier Orthodox-Roman Catholic Divide:
During a four evening series, Drifting Apart, Journeying Together, co-sponsered by the John Paul II Centre and the Archdiocese Ecumenical Commission (encompassing the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Jan. 21-28), representatives from Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions will look for a way of sharing an understanding of the social, political and cultural contexts surrounding past major church divisions.
Presenters will attempt to see more clearly the actual faith they share - apart from secular issues of the past which contributed to divisions. Presenters will also look a the values each group was attempting to preserve and question whether or not these values continue to require separation in the present day.
All sessions will be held at the John Paul II Centre from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. Registration $10/evening or $35.00/four evenings, by Jan 8. For more information call Anne: 352-1651.

The Orthodox-Roman Catholic Divide -Jan. 9, presenter: Fr. Brent Kuzyk, Descent of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Response: Terry Marner, member, R.C. Archdiocesan Ecumenical Commission.

The Protestant Reformation - Jan. 16, presenter: Dr. Yvonne Petry, Response: Fr. Paul Dungan.

The English Reformation - Jan 23, presenter: Rev. Gary Paterson, Response: Fr. Don Bolen.

An Ecumenical Panel Discussion - on mending past division. Jan. 30. Fr. Brent Kuzyk, Rev. Gary Paterson; Dr Yvonne Petry, Prof. Terry Marner.
