Agents of Freedom

Today we are celebrating the Baptism of the Lord. On this feast the Church is reminding us of the calling to which Baptism summons us. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to be a light to nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison and those who live in darkness from the dungeon. The trouble comes when we try to translate this command into our own lives. How can we be agents of vision and freedom for people? It's here that we have to use our imagination. The temptation is to look at our own imperfections and weaknesses, and then throw up our hands in surrender.  But it is most often in the
ordinary daily things of life that we are able to bring light and freedom to people.

We don't always know the consequences of our actions. We may never really know all the good we have done in our lives. There have been countless times when our care and concern for others have made a tremendous difference in people's lives. We just don't know about all those times and, in a way, that's a good thing. Our reward is not in seeing the results of our love, but simply in loving. The reading from the Acts of the Apostles tells us that "...because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil". You and I also have God with us.

It's so important to keep this vision of ourselves alive. In our opening prayer we asked God to keep us faithful to our calling. May today's feast encourage us to live out our vocation as those who are to bring freedom and hope to this world of ours.

 Peace,  Father John

Father’s Vacation

Fr. Norm will be away on a well deserved vacation from Jan. 14 – 25.  Due to the shortage of clergy, a priest is unavailable to replace him for Sunday Masses Jan. 19/20.  Therefore, we will have lay presided services at our regular Mass times.

Participation in the Sunday Eucharist is the privilege of all members of the church.  When this is not possible due to the absence of the priest, communities are still urged to come together to give God praise and thanks, to hear and respond to the Word of God and share Christ’s Sacrament.  The difference between a Lay Presided Service and a celebration of the Eucharist, or Mass, is that there is no Eucharistic prayer which includes the consecration of the bread and wine.  Only a priest can do this.  Holy Communion received at a Lay Presided Service has been consecrated at a previous Celebration of the Eucharist.
The gathering of the people, led by a designated Lay Minister will inspire the faithful in their daily life and enkindle in them the desire to celebrate the Eucharist once again.

“So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own.  There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings ”
(Matthew 6: 34)

NOMINATIONS FOR PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL

At the Parish Annual Meeting, March 10, 2002 elections for Pastoral Council will take place.   All
parishioners are asked to consider serving on Pastoral Council or one of the committees.  A supper and information evening will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2002 following the 5:00 p.m. mass to explore the needs and opportunities in parish leadership.  The following information is intended to provide some basic information on Pastoral Council and the positions that need to be filled at this time.  Please read on . . .

What is Pastoral Council all about?

All Christians, by virtue of their Baptism into Christ, have a responsibility and a role to play in bringing the Good News to the people of God through liturgy, catechetics and pastoral care in the community.  Every task-oriented community needs organization to accomplish its work so that all the people and resources dedicated to the task can be used to the best advantage.  Pastoral and Finance Councils bring together members of the community, the pastor and the pastoral team to work together to build the parish as a living Christian Faith community with the necessary organizational structure to carry out their responsibilities in the parish.  Council is a community of committed, believing leaders who are selected by the parish membership to discern in prayer the needs of the parish.  Pastoral Council is the primary consultative body in the parish.  The pastor or parish minister has overall responsibility for the community.

Qualifications and Eligibility

To serve on Pastoral Council individuals should possess the following

1 - An alive faith indicated by participation in worship and other church activities.
2 - An openness of mind that welcomes new learning and allows for seeing opportunities for  new ideas.
3 - A willingness to work collaboratively with other members of Council and the Parish Leadership Team.
4 - Appropriate leadership skills and interest in the area in question.
5 - A willingness to accept the duties and responsibilities of the position. Committee chairs are responsible for:
        • recruiting members to assist in implementing the committee mandate,
        • attending monthly Pastoral Council meetings and reporting on activities of the committee,
        • approving expenses of the committee,
        • completing the annual objective review and planning process including the budget for the  upcoming year,
        • and preparing the annual report of the committee.
