Unfolding Your Gift

St. Paul tells us that together we are Christ's body, but each of us is a different part of it. And one part cannot say to the other part, "I don't need you". Perhaps in some way, we as a Church have been guilty of doing just that. Over many years, perhaps centuries, more and more of the Church's ministry was given to the priest. Duties that could have been carried out by lay people were taken away from them and handed over to the clergy. And so the priest came to carry the burden of having more than his fair share of the work.

But now we are in a new time. This is a blessed time and we shouldn't underestimate how important this time is for the life of the Church. We are re-discovering ourselves as the Body of Christ, filled with many, many gifts. We are slowly trying to regain a balance so that the gifts of all can be recognized, used, and appreciated. Together we are Christ's body. Now that's something we should be remembering often. This vision of our- selves as the Body of Christ will help us to see how we can carry out the words we find in the gospel about bringing liberty to captives, new sight to the blind, and setting the downtrodden free. Each of us should spend some time going over the words of our second reading today. Paul is so clear and so emphatic in what he says that it is hard not to get the point. Every one of us is valuable. We each have our own unique gifts and it is through exercising our own gift that we
build up our community, which is the very body of Christ

Peace, Father John
