Standing Out

As Christians our first duty is to the truth. When we start hiding the truth or hiding from the truth, then we are abandoning our role as prophets. A prophet is one who sees the truth and has the courage to proclaim that truth no matter what the consequences may be. Fear can keep us from standing up for justice and for the truth, because we know that our stance can enrage many people.

As a Church we have a strong prophetic function. It is our duty to speak the truth no matter what the consequences might be. We can't stand by and just let things be. We can't just blend into the rest of society so that we don't get noticed any more. We are faced more and more with life and death issues: euthanasia, genetic engineering, abortion, environmental concerns, pornography, violence, global business ethics, starvation and world poverty.

Do we just blend into the rest of society and quietly disappear? Have our voices been silenced? What does it really mean to be a Christian and a Catholic? We must regain the sense of what it means to follow the Gospel of Life and to be willing to stand up and be counted. In his document entitled The Gospel of Life, Pope John Paul II states that "...we need now, more than ever, to have the courage to look the truth in the eye and to call things by their proper name, without yielding to convenient compromises or to the temptation of self-deception." Thousands of others are depending on us knowing about their situations of grief and pain.

Peace, Father John

Highlights of the January Pastoral Council Meeting
Our visioning session reflected on the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to declared the year 2001 International Year of the Volunteer (IYV2001). In recognition of the enormous social and economic contribution of volunteers worldwide, in Canada and in our local community, we have an opportunity to recognize the volunteers who play a valuable role in our local plus our Parish Community. We are looking for ideas and suggestions how to do this recognition throughout the year 2001. We are encouraging parish committees to look at ways of recognizing those within their own groups. A committee lead by Ruth, Wayne and Jane will be introducing various ideas for honoring our own Holy Cross Parish volunteers.

Thank you to all Holy Cross Parishioners and to those who are now Resurrection Parishioners for supporting the Archdiocesan Appeal, we exceeded our Parish Target of $57,323.00 by almost $10,000. Special thank you to the leadership group of Cal & Joyce Murphy, Frank Laurens, Eugene Achtemichuk, Ruth Robillard and Jane Kryzanowski, and to all those who were involved in the canvass; your time and effort is very much appreciated.

To encourage more community building and socializing, coffee, juice and donuts/cookies will be served after the 9:00 and 11:00 masses with the exception of those Sundays when bake sales or pancake breakfasts are being held. To make this a success and to get more involvement, we need a family(s) to volunteer to host the social after each mass. A signup list will be posted in the Gerein Center to allow families to choose the mass and Sunday they wish to host. Please volunteer to host one mass and to help make this another successful event at Holy Cross.

Remember to mark your calendars FEBRUARY 18TH, HOLY CROSS APPRECIATION LUNCHEON AND ANNUAL MEETING. All parishioners are invited to attend the luncheon and annual meeting. At the annual meeting you will have an opportunity to give input into the future of our Christian community of Holy Cross, elect of new pastoral council members, approve the budget for 2001, ask questions and provide comments about your Parish community.

Pastoral Council is looking for suggestions on how we can purchase and install an outside sign in front of Holy Cross Church. The sign would be used to display Mass times as well to advertise community and social events at the church. Are you in favor of a sign and do you have any suggestions on how we can achieve this goal. Please call a member of Pastoral Council with your ideas.
