The Fear of Following

Jesus knew what was in the hearts of people. He knew that the biggest obstacle to anyone following him was fear. Perhaps the biggest obstaclethat gets in our way is the fear of being inadequate. If we take seriously this call to follow Christ, we are afraid that we will not be up to the task.

We allow a distorted image of ourselves to hold us back from giving the love and service so many others need. When Jesus asked Simon to put out into deep water, was he not telling him that he had to try again even though he might have failed in the past? And, as we know, putting out into the deep is a wonderful image for going places where we fear to go. The key here is the presence of Christ. Jesus will not allow us to go it alone. He promises his presence, his power, his support in whatever we do. So much good has gone undone because of this irrational fear of following that afflicts so many of us. If we could only imagine the lonely, the sick, the elderly caught in their isolation. They need us to be with them. They are not looking for saviours or messiahs. They just want a friend. They don't want to be saved--just cherished.

Christ wishes to be made known to the world through us. As disciples of Christ we are called to cut loose certain things in our lives if we hope to follow him. And so our task for this coming week will be to look at those things we carry around which prevent us from fully following Christ. May the Lord help us all as we look at those who answered Jesus' call so many years ago.

Peace, Father John

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK - The ministry of Jesus to the sick is central to the life of the Church. Pope John Paul II in announcing this day stated; “I consider most appropriate, indeed, the bestowal upon the entire ecclesial community of an initiative which, as already practised in some nations and regions, has brought forth precious pastoral fruit.” Each year this observance occurs on Feb. 11, the memorial of our Lady of Lourdes. This day highlights the healing ministry of the Church. It reminds us that service to the sick and suffering cannot be neglected. It recognizes the great efforts of doctors, nurses, health care institutions and pastoral care givers to restore health to those afflicted with illness and disease. In recognition of this day, Holy Cross Parish will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Masses on Sun., Feb. 11. If you or someone you know wishes to receive the sacrament, plan to attend one of these Masses next Sunday.

January 29, 2001

Dear Friends in Christ:

We are all aware of the challenges facing our parishes today. Not the least of these challenges is the shortage of clergy and the dwindling numbers in church attendance.

I believe this is the right time for a major review of the issues facing the Archdiocese. We need a clear statement of our vision as a people of God. At the outset of this review, I am inviting your input. To accomplish this very difficult task requires all of us to think about what our vision is for the church 25 years from now. In order to initiate this process, I have established a Visioning Steering Committee. This committee is to be composed of clergy, religious and lay people representing the rural and urban demographics of the Archdiocese. Over the next two years, this committee will lead a process of reflection and dialogue involving everyone from parishes, through deanery, to Archdiocesan councils and groups.

As we begin this process, I am asking for your concerns and suggestions, either through your parish councils or directly to the visioning committee. These ideas should look to the needs of our church in the future, providing suggestions on how we can better have a joyful, hope-filled Christian life in the years to come.

May God bless you all.

Yours sincerely in Christ,

Peter J. Mallon
Archbishop of Regina

P.S. The next meeting of the Visioning Steering Committee will be in early March. Please write or e-mail your suggestions to:

SEEKING THE PERFECT PRIEST
Author UnknownThe results of a computerized study indicate the perfect priest preaches exactly fifteen minutes. He condemns sin but never upsets anyone. He works from 8 a.m. until midnight and is also the janitor. He makes $70 per week, wears good clothes, drives a good car, buys good books and gives $70.00 per week to the poor. He is 28 years of age and has been preaching for 30 years. He has a burning desire to work with teenagers and spends all his time with seniors.
The perfect priest smiles all the time with a straight face because he has a sense of humour that keeps him seriously dedicated to his work. He makes 15 calls daily on parish families, shut-ins and hospitalized, visits the schools every day, spends all his time evangelizing the unchurched and is always in his office when needed.

If you priest doesn’t measure up, simply send this letter to six other parishes that are tired of their priest too. Then bundle up your priest and send him to the church at the top of the list. Then remove that church, and add your own to the bottom. In one week you will receive 1643 priests, and one of them should be perfect.

This letter must be passed on within 15 days. Have faith in this matter – one church broke the chain and got its old priest back in less than 3 months!!!

Vocation Views
Do not be afraid. If the Lord is calling you to ordained or religious life do not be afraid. Jesus calls, and leads the way. (Luke 5: 1-11)

Today we are honoring those who are called to serve God’s people as priests, deacons and consecrated persons (sisters, brothers, societies of apostolic life, secular institutes). Of course we are all called to give our lives to the Lord (consecration) but some are called to do this in a public way and through a different lifestyle.
One parishioner wrote, “I value priests and deacons because of the strong commitment they have, especially in this day and age, to witness to others of their love of Jesus. I value Sisters because they carry with them a sense of wholeness, a sense of belonging to something more than this world.”

Take a moment to think about why you value these life vocations.
