Getting to the Bottom of it All

The basic temptation of Adam and Eve was not to disobedience, but to deny who they were. The man and woman were not God. They were created by God and in complete dependence on God, and now they wanted out of that relationship. That was the temptation and that was the sin. The deepest temptation is not the urge to misbehave, to do what we know we shouldn't do, but rather the call to compromise our basic identity -- to be whom we are not called to be.

Lent is a time for us to renew our identity as Christians. During this Lenten season thousands of catechumens throughout the world are preparing for their Baptism at Easter -- preparing to take on a new identity. For those of us who are already Baptized, our task is to renew our identity as Christians. The first thing we must do is examine our lives, and identify those obstacles to living out our identity as followers of Christ.  We are asked to remember who we are, and to act out of that knowledge.

It is important to note that the devil does not try to persuade Jesus away from ministry; he attempts instead to influence how Jesus looks at or carries out his ministry. Many, if not most of us, won't be tempted to leave our marriages or our priesthood or religious life. But we will be tempted to compromise -- to cheat on the difficulties of living our vocation -- to be less than faithful to our calling.

Our sanctity can be found within our own vocation. And so during this time of spiritual renewal, let us renew our commitment to living out our calling in the fullest possible way. May we all arrive at the celebration of Easter with renewed minds and hearts ready to rejoice with the risen Christ.

 Peace,  Father John

Vocation Views

This week we honour the call to holiness as a single person:

Tracy Kiliwnik from Weyburn writes, “When people question me about being single I often tell them, I may be alone but I am far from being lonely.  In fact I have grown to love the person I am and the times that I do spend alone are spent learning to share my feelings with God.  If there is no one around to talk to, I always know that God will listen.  I just needed to realize that I needed to listen to what God was asking of me.  I am still learning to put all my faith in God’s hands and to deal with what I have now.  I may be single, but I am happy with that and becoming the person that God wants me to be.  I am still learning every day about what God is calling me to do.”
