Empty Promises

The devil promised Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, but this was just an empty promise. The devil did not have the power to carry out such an extravagant promise. So many times, something or someone comes into our path, and we think how wonderful it would be to have that thing or that person. Our imagination runs wild. We think that we would be so happy, or have so much pleasure, if we could only get what we wanted. And yet, if we paused to really reflect on what was going on, we would soon discover that this promise of pleasure or happiness is only an empty one. That person or thing doesn't possess the power to give us what we know we really need or want.

But why do we give in to temptation? Because we choose to forget. We forget that we have committed ourselves to loving God and our neighbour. We forget that we have made life choices that exclude other life choices. We forget that Jesus told us that we must lose our lives in order to gain them. There are so many things we simply put out of our mind because we are focussed on getting what we want. And yet, in the end, all we get are empty promises.

Lent is a time of renewal. It is the springtime in the Liturgical Year. During this time we ask God to help us with the important task of inner renewal.  Lent is a time when we rejoice that God is a God of refreshment, of new life, of new beginnings.  Christ offers to bring us with him into a new and wonderful life. Together let us commit ourselves to prepare for the feast of Easter.

Peace,  Father John

Highlights from Feb. Pastoral Council Meeting

Our visioning session was a presentation by the Social Action Committee explaining their focus and their actions and programs. Part of their mandate is to educate their committee, and make our parishioners and our community aware of the needs that exist and threaten all aspects of our environment - “our world”,  in keeping with the social teaching of the Church.

Thank you to all the families who have volunteered to host our Sunday morning after mass coffee and snack gatherings. We encourage all parishioners to stop, visit and socialize with other members of our Holy Cross community. Thank you for your contributions to help offset the costs of these social gatherings. If you wish to volunteer, please contact Joyce or Cal Murphy. THANKS Joyce and Cal and all other participants.

We need the help of all our parishioners.  If you know of a family member, neighbor, or friend who is sick or in hospital, has experienced a recent loss or hardship, or is in need of a pastoral visit, please call the parish office.  If we don't hear about what is happening in our community, we can't respond with the appropriate action. Our pastors are always ready and willing to visit those in need.

We have not had any feedback on Pastoral Council’s suggestion of purchasing and installing an outside sign in front of the Church. The sign would be used to display Mass times as well as to advertise community and social events at the Church. Are you in favor of a sign and do you have any suggestions on how we can achieve this goal? Please call a member of Pastoral Council with your ideas.

SOMETHING NEW - SOMETHING SPECIAL - YOUR SUGGESTIONS. You will notice that there are suggestion boxes and forms at both entrances to our church. We encourage all parishioners to provide Pastoral Council with your comments on what you like about Holy Cross, make suggestions for improvements or change, or ask any questions you may have.  Simply drop your form in the suggestion box. It's your parish, your community, let us hear from you.

The year 2001 has been declared the International Year of the Volunteer. We wish to recognize our volunteers at the 11th Annual Vital Link Dinner to be held April 24 in Regina. We are looking for nominations from Holy Cross who met the following criteria: i) long term service, ii) presently actively involved in the parish and iii) have served in a strong leadership role in the parish. Nomination are to be in by the March 13th Pastoral Council Meeting.

Thank You to all parishioners who attended and participated in the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and Annual Meeting on February 18th.  To all members who have remained on or who were elected to Pastoral Council for 2001; thank you for sharing your time and talents in providing the leadership needed to continue building a strong vibrant and growing Christian community at Holy Cross. Your new Pastoral Council Chair is Sean Kukura. Congratulations Sean!

We still have some vacancies on Pastoral Council, in particular the 1st and 2nd Vice Chairs. If you are interested in becoming involved in the parish or want more information, please contact Sean Kukura, Wayne Rutten or Jane Kryzanowski. We need you!  The future of our parish will be affected by a shortage of leaders.  We know that there are many great leaders in our community.
