DEATH COMES TO L. EUGENE RAKER
Retired Ellensburg Minister Succumbs Here Early Today
Laska Eugene Raker, 77, retired Ellensburg minister, died at a local hospital early today after an illness of two weeks. He formerly was pastor of the Baptist Community church at Kittitas.
Born September 8, 1869, at Delta, O., he was a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. He served as an evangelist and held several pastorates in Ohio churches, later studying at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky., and the Cincinnati Bible Seminary, after which he was ordained as a minister in the Christian church.
Just before moving to the Kittitas valley in 1931 he resigned as pastor of the First Christian church of Byesville, O., because of a chronic throat condition. His condition improved after he came to the valley and he served as pastor of the Kittitas church.
Before coming here he operated a retail dairy at St. Joseph Mo., and also was in business in Boise, Idaho, and later took up a homestead near Reno, Nev.
He operated a Fairview district farm here, until four years ago, when he moved to Ellensburg. He brought enough cobblestones from the farm to build a novel home on East Eighth street, the idea having been inspired by the three cobblestone mansions of the Studebaker brothers which he saw at Anderson, Ind., 40 years before. The Eighth street property recently was purchased by the county for expansion of the Rodeo grounds.
Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Florence Lueth of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; a daughter, Rachel, eight years old, and a son, Paul, four. Also surviving are a foster sister, Mrs. Charles Miller of Fort Wayne, Ind., and numerous other relatives in Ohio.
At the time of his death he was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance church of Ellensburg.
Funeral services will be held at the Honeycutt chapel Thursday afternoon at 1:30 clock, with Rev. J. R. Irwin officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The family requests that only garden flowers be sent and that money intended for flowers be donated to an Alliance or other fundamental missionary organization.

Notes for Hallie Pearl Raker:
From HISTORY OF FULTON COUNTY, Lucas County Library:
Lowell and Hallie Knapp on their 60th wedding anniversary. (June 8, 1970) I was born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1885, the third of six girls, of Mary Ann Whitmer Raker and Amos Peery Raker. We were all born in a very small home behind grandfather Rakers, south of Delta, about two miles. My oldest sister was Edith Crile, then Nora Rim-sell, me, Elva Slater, and a baby sister Lola who died at birth, and my youngest sister Marguerite Poorman. We didn t have much money, but never considered ourselves poor.
School consisted of three terms, spring term was two months, then a break, fail term for two months a break and then the winter term for four months. My teachers were Henry Mann, Ella Snyder, Laura Smout, Jessie Wilcot, Frank Butler, Edith Raker, Maine Moore and Roy Mann. There was a recitation bench in the front where each class was called to recite. I always got 100 in deportment. When we were fourteen years old, we were taken to Wauseon to take the Boxwell Examination. If we passed,we went to Delta High School without paying W tuition. It was a two mile walk and there were sixteen in my class.Verne Kesler was a playmate and we spent time braiding grass into dolls and used rags for hair ribbons. Once we sent small sister Elva to get these for us from the sack that always hung on the closet door. Since there were very few rags, she fell in head first screaming. We made grass houses and animals were made of apples and sticks and enclosed in paris. Teachers always took us to the woods in the spring with our lunches to pick flowers. We didn' t have children's parties, but neighborhood families shared potluck dinners and the day together often.
Lowell Knapp and I were neighborhood kids together. We went together a long time and had to postpone our wedding when he became very ill and spent three months the in Toledo Hospital. We were married in 1910 and had been married sixty eight years at the time of his death in 1978.
We adopted Bud when he was a year old. His mother, Alice Crile and Homer Grice, were divorced at that time. We adopted them both, Alice and Bud who was born in 1927.
We never felt we took him away, for our home was hers too. Four years later she met Ted
Cotton, in Detroit, Michigan, and married him. Bud spent a month or two with them, in
Boston, each summer. He wrote that he wished he could be both places. The Ice Cream was better in Boston but he missed his bike and the chickens. He graduated from Delta High School in 1945, and went to Boston University one year, took the exam for Annapolis and graduated in four years. He rented a home there and we and the Cottons spent a month there together at the time of his graduation from Annapolis. He took his commission in the Air Force but never missed a week writing to us. He was in service for twenty eight years, and retired the day after Lowell died. He was in the Pentagon for four years and then to the Philippine Islands. His wife wouldn t go with him, so he too his son Mike. His wife, Lou, kept the two girls in Las Vegas end eventually married a doctor there. After his retirement, Bud married again, had two children and lived in Tacoma, Washington. Before his retirement he had been a Colonel for seven years. While in Thailand he was able to visit his cousin, Herbert Poorman, Commander of the Shangrila. While on board, he wrote of sleeping in the  Admirals bed.   Lowell and I were in the Convalescent home together for several years before his death. After this, Bud arranged for me to be in Tacoma. I flew to Denver, where I met his oldest daughter Susie, Mike and Stacy. These children were altogether at Susie s home for Thanksgiving. The next day, I flew onto Tacoma, Washington, where Bud had arranged for me to stay in a private home near him. The people were lovely, I had such good care and food. Bud never let me eat alone, they, or the children were always with me. His wife, Val, is a lovely mother to the two children, Debbie and Buddy.
I stayed until spring but was happy to be home with my lifelong friends and my sister
Margeurite. (This was taken from a Library History
Tape, recorded in November of 1974 by Norma Baker Segrist at Howards Convalescent
Home.)  Hallie lived to be 103, she died July 21, 1988.

Notes for Marguerite Amy Raker:
From HISTORY OF FULTON COUNTY, Lucas County Library:
Marguerite was born on a farm two miles south of Delta, September17, 1898. Her
Grandfather, Jacob Raker and Grandmother Fanny Perry settled in Swancreek Township
in 1839. Her Father was Amos Perry Raker and her Mother was Mary Ann Whitmer.
This information is taken from the Oral History Series at the Delta library-an interview
with Marguerite by Henna Jane Hunt on March 7, 1980.
My eldest sister, Edith, is twenty years older than I and was teaching school when I
was born. She married Frank Orile and had three children. My next sister, Nora Zell (Norrie) taught school for two years before marrying R.  Russell. They lived on Plattson Road (Co. Rd.D) south of Delta on the old Russell farm and had two children. Sister Hallie taught school three years before she married Lowell Knapp and moved to the Knapp farm a half mile from the Raker homestead on Route 109. Sister Elva ‘Elvie" married Sam Slater after teaching for two years and had two children. She was the last teacher at the Tough Match School. It was always a question why the school and road was so called. Was it because the road was a rough, tough one, or that the boys living on it were rough and tough?
My maternal grandparents, the Whitmers came from Switzerland. Our neighbors the
Soles and Lillys and were always in and out of our house. We girls had a play house in a
corncrib, made whistles of willow whips, braided grass into dolls, made dandelion chains, and there were swings in the  orchard. We had lots of pets, new born pigs, calves, once in a while a colt, chicks, geese, dogs and cats. The men liked to hunt and they always came to our house for dinner.
I walked to a one room school, where there were four in my class. We took a Boxwell
Exam and if we passed, we could attend High School in town, free. I began teaching
school at seventeen and had thirty six pupils. Several of them, almost as old as I. I taught
for two years and met my future husband when I taught north of Tedrow and roomed with
his parents, the Poormans. The war came at this time and Leo was gone, so I worked the
summer in a War Plant in Dayton, Ohio. I taught one more year and when Leo was
discharged from service, we were married in 1920. We lived in Columbus until he graduated. He then went to work for the Franz Stone Company and we built a home in Delta. The Twenties were really roaring for us, two sons, Herbert and Don were born, and my mother and father died.
Herbert graduated from Delta High School and from Culver Military Academy in
1939. He went two years to Ohio State and then received an appointment to Annapolis. He was a great trumpet player and secured  scholarships. Alter coming home from overseas and getting his wings, he married Alice Elizabeth Kelly, who was also in the service as a secretary To a Naval Air Commander. Herb always told me if he ever had his own carrier (ship), he would have reached his highest ambition, and sure enough he was appointed commander of the Shangrila. I was able to see this and to realize that his flag flew with the U.S. flag whenever he was aboard. He retired from the Navy after thirty three years and lives in Florida. He had two children, Scott and Barbara (Bacardi) who lives in Alaska.
Our second son, Don, graduated from Delta High School in 1945. He  attended Johnson Bible College for two years and graduated from Minnesota Bible College after two more years. He married Ruth Nelson from Kingston, Missouri. She was also a minister. They first ministered in Minnesota, then Fulton Union and Sylvania in Ohio, where a son, Mark, was born. Then while in Ypsilanti, Michigan, a daughter, Marie, was born. Both Don and Ruth
secured teaching degrees from Eastern Michigan University and taught in Dearborn High for ten years. Don had never given up the dream of  missionary work, so they left for Rhodesia, Mrica, where they taught in a  private school for four years. They were in Austria a year and then in Puerto Rica for six years. I visited them twice in Puerto Rica and fell in love with the climate. I also spent eight months with them in Africa. Don and family
returned to Dallas Christian College where he was Superintendent.  Son Mark became a
lawyer in Detroit, Michigan and married Kathryn Smith.
Marguerite now lives, as of March 1989, with her son Don, in Texas.
