I first walked through AA's doors back in 1989 and have failed repeatedly at sobriety. As good as the program is, I just never got it until now. I never understood it was the first drink that trapped me on that long lonely road of self destruction. Got a question about my sobriety, fire away, got a question about my drinking days, go for it. ask the wino |

GOD, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change Courage to change the things I can and Wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace. Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen. |

I was gonna put some stuff here about the origins of the Serenity Prayer, but that's been done to death elsewhere. I'm reminded about the movie "Good Will Hunting", and the reference to the only thing I can teach is about me, everything else is already on the web. I grew up in an alcoholic home with varying degrees of happiness. My father was a prison warder, my mother was a barmaid who went on to join the Feds. I was the third of four children, I felt I never quite fit in anywhere. Partly due to the isolation of growing up in the bush, partly because of my parents alcohol problems, but mainly because I was not comfortable being me. Although my drinking career began when I was 12 I remain convinced to this day I was born into it. Alcohol was an integral part of every adult life I saw. After a series of failed relationships averaging 3 years I met and married my wife. Alannah has allowed me to grow in ways I didn't even know grew and I thank God for her part in my life. |
