I have always considere Florence as one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. And it's a lovely city indeed. It's not a big city, and the center is a small little enjoyable place, where you can walk through centuries. The hills that surrounds it are full of olive trees and of suggestions. And people are really nice and open. And if you can understand a little Italian, well... they know great jokes too.
Walking in the centre is breathing the atmosphere of centuries of history. Most of all Medioveal times, when Dante Alighieri lived and suffered here, before being exiled, and the Renaissance, the moment when the city flourished and the Signoria dei Medici brought the city to the highest peaks of power and culture. Churches, palaces and museums are there to witness all this.
The Uffizi are one of the most renowed museums of the world, and going there is really to enjoy a trip in the beauty and the force of art. There are masterpieces from centuries of creations, and there are the well known paintings by Sandro Botticelli, in front of which many people sufer of the so-called Stendhal syndrome, when beauty becomes more than the soul and mind can bear...
Palazzo Vecchio, il Ponte Vecchio, Santa Maria del Fiore, Santa Maria Novella... The list of places to see could be long, but I would suggest to walk in the narrow medieval streets. If you are lucky enough to be alone there you could easily get the impression to be brought back in time, and would not appear absurd if a knight on his horse would appear from behind the corner...
