ACTIONS
ANTIOXIDANT
Antioxidants
are substances,
such as grape seed or
pine
bark extract,
vitamin E, vitamin C, or beta carotene, that appear
to protect body cells from the damaging effects of oxidation.
This would make them especially helpful
for the circulatory system and for soft tissue maintenance.
Two leading medical dictionaries define antioxidants,
Stedman's Medical Dictionary,
25th Ed.; an agent that inhibits oxidation and thus prevents
rancidity of oils or fats or the deteriation of other materials
through oxidative processes.
Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary,28th Ed.
One of many widely used synthetic or natural substances
added to a product to prevent or delay its deteriation
by action of oxygen in the air;
rubber
paints
vegetable oils
prepared foods
commonly contain antioxidants.
garlic
tumeric
ginsengs
royal jelly
bee
pollen
Vitamins A, C and E
A group of highly reactive compounds called free radicals,
formed by radiation; excessive ozone; smog and air pollution;
cigarette smoke; meat that is fried; and by normal breakdown
of proteins within our bodies.
The most abundent free radicals appear to be
the peroxides and superoxides, are merely fragments of oxygen.
