SEPT 29-OCT 1
Gems 1 @ Timberjacks 3...(by Todd Easton)
The Montana Timberjacks return home after being on the road for the last 20 games. During the road trip the T'Jacks continued a downslide that started at home and they fell from contention. The loss of top starter Ted Lyons and Whit Wyatt contributed mightily to their downfall. The T'Jacks look forward to solid contributions from both next year as they should contend once again behind the continuing improvement of youngsters Joe Gordon, Bill Nicholson and Tommy Henrich. Veteran leadership with Mike Kreevich and Joe Kuhel should also help.
GAME 1 - The Gems and The Timberjacks get together to begin a series for pride and to help determine draft position in the upcoming 1940 draft. Pitching is dominate until the ninth inning by both teams. The Gems look like the solidify a win when Joe DiMaggio and Mel Ott homer in the ninth off T'Jack pitching to give Staten Island a 4-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. Mysteriously, Van Lingle Mungo returns to the mound for the bottom half. Manager Blake saw no reason to bring in fresh pitching. Maybe he was playing for the draft slot? Montana takes advantage of situation as Joe Kuhel each contribute two RBI in the inning. Gordon's come on his league leading 37th home run. T'Jacks come back to win 5-4.
GAME 2 - Gem starter Bill Lee picks up his 20th win of the season in a 7-3 Gem victory. Lee struggle a little early giving up two quick runs but he settled down going the distance. Timberjack reliever Whitey Moore gave up four runs in the 9th to allow Staten Island to win. Max West and Charlie Gehringer each have a big game with a couple of hits and RBI. West hit his 13th hr of the season. Pitching has been bad for the T'Jacks coming down the home stretch and management promises to shore it up somehow.
GAME 3 - The first game of a season ending double header. Who's the master scheduler
here? 20 game road trips followed by double headers at the end of the season. Hope the guy
isn't the official scorer....
GAME 4 - Its the final game of the season and the Timberjacks announce that henceforth they will be known as the Missoula Timberjacks as a tribute to the great city of Missoula. The T'Jacks get great pitching again as Jack Knott "mows" down the Gems for 6 innings. Reliever Whitey Moore struggles again but doesn't blow it this time as Montana holds on for a 5-3 win. Pinch hitter Reb Russell, hitting for Knott, hits his first homerun of the season...a three run shot in the bottom of the sixth. Starter Ken Chase pitches the final 2.2 innings for his first save of the season. See you next year!! We're available for trades!! By virtue of winning 3 of the games in the series the Timberjacks "lose" a slot in the drafting process.
Whales 2 @ Brownsa 2…(by Bill Holcomb)
Game 1) The Browns outslug Chicago and hold on for the 8-7 win. Ollie Bejma slugged two solo homers and Cecil Travis hit a solo longball, too. Travis went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI. Schoolboy Rowe went 6 innings enroute to his 9th win of the year. Whales starter Curt Davis went the distance, but absorbed the loss, though he did his best to help his cause with a 6th inning 3 run homer. ………
Game 2) Pinky Higgins hit a two out 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, but Chicago came right back with 5 big runs in the 10th to take a crazy 13-8 win. Frank Demaree went 3 for 5 for the Whales with 2 RBI. Don Gutteridge belted a 3 run homer in the 10th. Gus Mancuso went 2 for 6 with 3 RBI. Hal Trosky went 3 for 5 for the Brownies with 3 RBI. Pete Appleton picked up the win in relief of Dizzy Dean. Joe Sullivan took the loss……….
Game 3) St. Louis hammered out 16 hits, but still ended up on the losing end of a 10-9 score. The Whales' Arky Vaughan went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI. Hank Greenberg slammed a 3rd inning 2 run homer. Sam West went 2 for 3 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. The big hit for Chicago was a two out, 3 run triple by pinch hitter Roy Weatherly in the 8th. For the Browns, Morrie Arnovich went 3 for 5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Travis enjoyed a 3 for 5 performance with 2 runs scored. Ted Williams went 2 for 4 with 2 ribbies. Trosky hit a 3 run homer and knocked in another with a single. Reliever Ira Hutchinson earned the win while Lee Grissom took the loss………
Game 4) The Whales close out their season with a 17 hit, 10-8 win. Vaughan went 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base. Gutteridge chipped in going 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Wally Berger went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. Demaree ended the year by swinging a hot bat, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Even light hitting Mel Almada got in on the act by going 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and a stolen base. Bob Joyce went 8.2 innings for the win. Williams hit a 2 run homer in his last at bat of the year in the 9th. Trosky closed out another productive season going 3 for 5 with a 2 run homer. Higgins hit his second longball of the series, a 4th inning 2 run shot, while going 2 for 4. Both Bejma and Birdie Tebbetts went 2 for 4 with RBI doubles. Browns' starter Lefty Mills left the game in the 3rd with an injury. Reliever Jack Kramer came on in relief and true to form he ended up taking the loss, his 22nd of the year! ………..
Though Chicago finished with the league's worst record they managed to out hit St. Louis and take the last series of the season. So, it's on to the draft where both teams hope to better themselves and return to respectability.

Coyotes 1, Electrics 3 (by Rob Norton)
MESA, Ariz. - Once again, the Red Mountain ended a WIWAG season battling for second place. To catch the Duh-Luth, they would need to dispatch with the Schenectady Electrics post haste.
Friday’s opener featured Boom-Boom Beck starting for Schenectady. Boom-Boom was taken into custody by ballpark security immediately before the game, delaying the first pitch for 30 minutes while he was interrogated. Found to be harmless, he was released back to the Schenectady bullpen to complete his warmup. Meanwhile, ballpark security returned to the airport to ensure that nobody was trying to do anything dastardly like check their luggage at the curb. . . Frank McCormick gave Boom-Boom an early lead with an RBI double in the first off Coyote starter Dutch Leonard. Cookie Lavagetto whacked a single with the bases loaded in the second, scoring two and giving Leonard a lead to work with. In the fifth, the Coyotes loaded the bases with nobody out and a run already home in the inning. Boom-Boom (why is there a hyphen in his name anyway?) walked in a run, gave up an RBI single to Chet Ross, and the flood gates were open. Even Leonard picked up an RBI single, and by the time Boom-Boom left the game it was 8-1 with 2 runners on. Bud Thomas retired the side, but it was all over. Final: Red Mountain 8, Schenectady 3.
Saturday was a bit calmer. Ballpark security was nowhere to be found (still at the airport I suppose), and Buck Ross and Eddie Smith were set to square off. Pretty much a yawner: Schenectady 4, Red Mountain 3.
Sunday, a double dip! Bump “In The Night” Hadley vs. Joe “Crack House” Krakauskas in the opener. Dolf Camilli opened the scoring in the 2nd with a 2-run homer to put the Coyotes up 2-0. A seven-run second inning for Schenectady erased that lead. The Coyotes started chipping away at the lead, however, finally chasing Hadley in the 6th with 1 on, 2 out, 2 home, and trailing 7-5. But the Electrics picked up single runs in each of the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings to put it out of reach 10-5. The Coyotes needed the nightcap to split the series and have a reasonable chance of catching Duh-Luth for second place.
Steve Sundra took the mound for Red Mountain, and Nels Potter stood in their way of a win. Schenectady picked up a run in the third to open the scoring, then another in the fourth. With the score tied 2-2 in the 7th, Lavagetto led off with a double. Bobby Doerr singled to right, and an error by Joe Vosmik allowed Lavagetto to score the go-ahead run. Three runs in the eighth off Johnny Broaca, however, killed the Coyotes. Final: Schenectady 5, Red Mountain 3. Oh poo!

Also, congratulations to the NL champ, the Palm Springs SideWinders...who just happen to be the defending baseball champion from 1938!!!. Great job again LOU
