July 30- August 2

Zephyrs 1 @ Aces 3...(by Mark Cohen)

The first place Zephyrs came to town and the underachieving Aces suddenly played up to their pre-season hype, taking 3 of 4.

Game One: Aces 5 Zephyrs 1 A resurgent Larry Jackson (13-10) won his 4th in a row with a complete game victory. Don Buford knocked in a pair and Groat had 3 hits. Joey Jay took the loss, while Tom Haller had 3 hits (2 doubles) for Lemon Grove.

Game Two: Aces 7 Zephyrs 6 Turk Farrell won ugly as Lemon Grove made it close with 2 runs in the 8th. Pete Mikkelson picked up a save. Curt Flood had 4 hits and Bill White knocked in 3 to lead San Diego. Hank Fischer took the loss for the Zephyrs, despite a pair of homers and 4 RBIs by John Bateman.

Game Three: Aces 12 Zephyrs 0 Sonny Siebert fanned 10 while allowing just 4 singles as the Aces pounded Bob Friend. Bill White had 3 hits and 4 RBIs, while Buford, Maye and Williams each knocked in a pair.

Game Four: Zephyrs 9 Aces 3 Lemon Grove salvaged the final game behind Mickey Lolich's (12-4) complete game performance. Bob Hendley continued his horrendous season, dropping to 4-7. Dalton Jones led the offense with a triple, homer, and 3 RBIs. Yaz and Oliva added solo shots. San Diego's Joe Gibbon threw a couple of pitches in relief and then crawled off to the disabled list for 6 days.

Waves 2 @ Senators 2…(by Phil Wagner)

July 30 -- Palisades 5 Washington 4
Gene Oliver's pinch hit eighth inning home run won the game for Palisades after Washington tied things at four in the sixth on base hits from Rich Rollins and Mike Shannon.   The Senators outhit the Waves 13 to six.  Ray Culp the winner (7-7), Ed Connolly the loser (2-4) both in relief.  Al McBean earned his 11th save.

July 31 - Washington 6 Palisades 5
Fred Whitfield's three-run homer first inning homer was not enough for the Waves.   Boog Powell crunched a three-run shot of his own as part of a four-run sixth that briefly gave Washington a 5-3 lead.  A two-run pinch homer by Roman Mejias tied things in the seventh before Bill Bruton's triple brought in the winner in the eighth.   An entertaining game, with Bill Pleis (3-4) earning the win in relief and McBean (2-7) taking the loss.

August 1 - Washington 9 Palisades 2
Big win for the Senators who got big games out Rollins (4 hits and 4 RBI) and Ed Kirkpatrick (3 hits, 2 RBI) as well as Ken McBride who improved to 2-7 with seven-inning, six-hit six-strikeout effort.  Culp lasted just three innings, serving up 11 hits and took the loss.

August 2 - Palisades 10 Washington 4
The Waves got their revenge as Willie Mays and Ron Hansen (??%#&) hit two-run homers with Eddie Mathews and John Roseboro both driving in a pair as well.  Steve Barber walked seven and faced 16 batters while managing to retire just five before hitting the showers; he fell to 4-12 on the year.  Fred Talbot (5-4) picked up the win in relief of George Brunet who managed just a shaky three-and-a-third.

Axemen 3 @ Micro Mets 1…(by Don Rahn)

July 30, 1964 – San Jose 6 Schenectady 2   -   The San Jose middle three - Robinson,Wagner and Thomas - hit for a combined 8 for 14 with three runs scored and five RBI.  Robinson hit a solo homer.  Axemen starting pitcher Hank Aquirre improved to 7-9 with 7.2 solid innings of work before giving way to Dick Radatz who notched his 15th save.  The Axemen outhit the MicroMets 13-8.
July 31, 1964 - San Jose 9 Schenectady 7 (12 innings)   -   Woody Held drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning as San Jose survived a late Schenectady scare.  The MicroMets fell behind in the top of the 1st inning as the Axemen scored four times, three on a Lee Thomas homer.  Schenectady eventually tied the game in the bottom of the 9th, but it fell apart in extra innings.  Schenectady outhit the Axemen 15-10.
August 1, 1964 - San Jose 5 Schenectady 3   -   August began just like July ended for the hard luck MicroMets - with a loss at the hands of the Axemen who just seem to get the timely hits.  After Rico Carty got Schenectady off to a 2-0 1st inning lead with a 2-run homer, San Jose put a 2-spot on the board in the 2nd, and then a 3-spot in the 4th!!!  All of San Jose's hits were singles.
August 2, 1964 - Schenectady 4 San Jose 2    -   The last minute insertion of 3rd baseman Charlie Smith really paid off for the MicroMets as Smith launched a 3-run 1st inning homer to stake Tony Cloniger to a lead he would not relinquish.  An "available" Ron Santo was given a rest - and Smith delivered!!!  Cloniger (9-5) retired the first 13 batters he faced before giving up a walk in the 5th inning.

Grays 3 @ Dukes 1…(by Jeff Papas)

DULUTH - No disrespect intended to the visitors, but Duluth really plays poorly against the Grays.

Game 1 - Dukes 7, Grays 5
Game 2 - Grays 8, Dukes 6
Gane 3 - Grays 6, Dukes 3
Game 4 - Grays 8, Dukes 4

Less said from the home perspective, the better.  Congratulations to Worcester, a superior team in every respect.

Roses 0 @ Highlanders 4…(by Todd Easton)

The Mt Hood Roses arrive in Missoula, the Garden City of Montana. That's right even Montana has flowers, at least one month a year. This was the battle for 2nd place in the AL West behind Duluth who has been slowly pulling away. The Highlanders have played much better since going 0-11. Missoula had won 4 in a row against the Roses include a 3 game series sweep last month in Oregon.

GAME 1 - This game matched up the wiley old veteran Jim Bouton, who has pitched very well of late; against the young stud Luis Tiant. Who would get the upper hand? Both pitchers pitch complete games but OF George Thomas gets the go ahead run in the 6th with his 2nd homer of the season to put Missoula up 2-1. Thomas has just recently been able to crack the starting lineup of Missoula. Bouton shuts down the Roses the rest of the way as the winning streak is run to 5. Bouton raises his record to 10-8 while Tiant falls to 6-7. Bouton ends up with a 4 hitter on no earned runs in the 3-1 complete game victory.

GAME 2 - It looks to be another great pitching performance by Highlander pitching. This time its Hal Brown, who replaced Ray Hebert in the starting lineup. Brown is cruising until the ninth inning when Bobby Richardson walks. Then Roger Maris steps to the plate and here is the call.....Firstbaseman CHANCE,B's on the bag ... RICHARDSON with a substantial lead BROWN,H kicks and delivers ... hit hard to right center ... THOMAS scampering back at the track ... he leaps ... gone ... home run for MARIS ... and two runs score MARIS will touch all the bases ... and he's sure taking his time ... he's greeted at the plate. Maris can still show flashes of brilliance occasionally. He ties the score at 2 all until the 11th inning when Highlander OF George Thomas again comes to the plate.......Thomas comes through again for the 2nd game in a row. This time he hits a 3 run homer and the Highlanders win 5-2 on the walk off homerun.

GAME 3 - Its a wacky day in Missoula today as the hitting for both teams comes alive. The Roses draw first blood as they get out to a 2-0 lead in the first off Orlando Pena. Mt Rood P Dick Stegman however is unable to hold it and gives up 7 runs in the 2nd inning. Mt Hood comes right back with two more in the top of the 3rd and eventually chase Pena in the 8th. Pena leaves with a 9-6 lead which is enough as the Highlanders hold off the Roses and win 10-7. Pena improves to 8-10 and Dick Hall earns his 14th save. Stigman falls to 8-8. Bobby Allison has a big game for the Roses going 3-4 with a triple and his 19th homerun. He also scores 3 and drives in 3.

GAME 4 - Missoula fans bring their brooms as the Highlanders go for the 8th win in a row against the Roses and their 2nd consecutive series sweep; the first at home. This game is a mirror image of the last as the Roses score first but are unable to hold the lead behind ace Robin Roberts. Missoula counters with Jack Fisher who struggles but still wins 7-6 as 3 relievers combine to finish the game with Dick Hall earning another save, his 15th. Fisher improves his record to 12-6. His era is a sub par 3.71 but he is getting major run support. The Highlanders sweep and have creeped back into the race after that lousy, pathetic streak. Am I beating it to death to much?

White Sox 3 @ Comets 1…(by Mike Cascarano)

It's too bad that John's Chisox are in the same division as the red-hot
Cardinals, because this team is REAL good!!!

Comets  3  Chisox  2......Gibson (10-10) evened his record by going the
distance and K'd 8 in the process. Peters (12-10) took the cg loss. A
two-run triple by F. Alou in the 3rd proved to be the game winner.

Chisox  10  Comets  3.....Ford (15-8) needed much less run support than he
received as the White sox hit big dasy from K. Boyer 4 for 5, 3 RBI and
Callison 4 for 5, 2 RBI to lead the attack. Veale (8-7) had another rought
outing and only lasted three innings, allowing 7 ER's.

Chisox  1  Comets  0......Good pitching duel between Chicago's Marichal
(15-6) as he K'd 11 in the win and loser. Law (10-6) as Julian Javier's
solo shot in the 2nd inning is all the young Dominican would need.

Chisox  5  Comets  3.....Ellis (7-5) over Richardson (1-3) as Callison's
3-run BLAST in the 6th breaks a 2-2 tie and proves to be the winning hit.
F. Robinson and R. Allen also homer in a losing cause for Carlsbad.

Indians 2 @ Blaze 2…(by The Baseball Curmudgeon)

#1…Mickey Mantle doubled and homered (24) and Jim Bunning (9-10) went the distance for a 3-1 Columbus triumph. Joe Horlen (-5) took the loss.

#2…Blaze rolled out the power with a pair of HR’s, one from an expected source, Harmon Killebrew (26) and a surpsie from Art Mahaffey (1) while on in relief as the Blaze took this one, Mahaffey relieved a shaky Sam McDowell in the 6th and finished the contest. Lennie Green homered for the Indians.

#3…Jack Hamilton made his debut for the Blaze and couldn’t get out of the first inning, absorbing a 6-0 whitewash by Milt Pappas. A 3-run HR in the opening stanza by Dick McAuliffe highlighted a 5-run frame. Pappas finished with a one hitter, a single by Dick Tracewski in the 6th.

#4…Bill Skowron’s 9th inning 3-run double off Hoyt Wilhelm gave the Blaze an 8-7 win and a series split. Mahaffey, who seems to have found his niche as a reliever, evened his record at 3-3. Mantle and Jim Gentile went deep for the Indians while Killebrew homered for Brooklyn.

Panthers 3 @ Cardinals 1….(by Bill Holcomb)

Game 1)   Panther's starter Wally Bunker overcame a rocky start to shut the Cards out through the last 6 innings as Boca takes the opener, 5-3. The Panthers erased a 3-2 deficit in the 4th to take a lead which Bunker would not relinquish. Bobby Wine singled with one out against Cards' starter Fred Newman. Bob Skinner followed with a double and Bunker hit a sac fly to tie the game. Andre Rodgers singled in Skinner to put Boca up. Orlando Cepeda added a solo homer in the 7th.

Game 2)  Boca starter Ernie Broglio went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and showed he could pitch a little, too, as the Panthers take game 2, 8-4. Wine had a big day going 2 for 4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Felix Mantilla went 2 for 4 for the Cards with a solo homer. Southpaw Al Downing took the loss. Wes Stock came on to pitch 2 scoreless frames for the save.

Game 3)  St. Louis starter Gaylord Perry gave up back-to-back homers in the 1st, a 3 run shot by Cepeda and a solo job off the bat of Don Demeter, as the Panthers took an early 4-0 lead. It appeared that Boca ace Don Drysdale would have an easy time of it until the 6th. Willie Smith led off the inning with a home run. Three consecutive singles by Jim Ray Hart, Cookie Rojas, and Don Blasingame made the score 4-2. After pinch hitter Dick Schofield walked to load the bases Lou Brock hit a sac fly to cut the Panthers' lead to one run. Ty Cline put the Cards ahead 6-4 with a 3 run homer. Relievers Tom Butters and Frank Kreutzer held the lead and Ed Roebuck pitched a scoreless 9th for the save. Perry got the win despite a tough outing.

Game 4) Brock gave the Cardinals a 1st inning lead against old timer Warren Spahn with a lead off homer. Unfortunately for St. Louis this would be all they could muster against the crafty southpaw. Spahn went on to shut the Cards out the rest of the way. Cepeda provided most of the run production for Boca with a 3rd inning 2 run homer and a solo shot in the 8th. Cepeda hit 4 homers in the series. Jim O'Toole continues his recent struggles and took the loss.
