Biography |
" Dan is a 12 year old with a 35 year old heart. There is so much depth, so much going on behind his eyes, you realize: This is a kid who has lived a life. This is a kid who can appear haunted and troubled by his past. Yet, he's charming. That kind of maturity is hard to find in a 12 year old." Chris Columbus |

He wanted to be an actor ever since he was five years old, but his parents never did like the idea and didn't encourage him much. After a lot of persuading, however, Daniel landed his first major role in 1999 as young David Copperfield in the BBC-TV adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel. " My Mum sent in a Polaroid of me to the BBC, because I've always wanted to act since I was five." Daniel said. " My mum and dad never thought it was a very good idea. So I went for about five auditions and then I got the part." Daniel was the one unknown in the all star cast. Director Simon Curtis said it was "weird at times to be directing some of the greatest actors in the world with the newest actor in the world." As the young David Copperfield, Radcliffe won praise for what the Boston Herald called , " a heart wrenching performance." He was also well regarded by his fellow actors. " He was great." said Copperfield castmate Trevor Eve. " He's really bright, and he's absolutely terrific!" Director Curtis called Radcliffe " a perfectly delightful boy." Daniel also had a small role in The Tailor of Panama (2000) starring Pierce Brosnan, as the son of Geoffery Rush and Jamie Lee Curtis. The biggest deal however, was when he landed the much coveted role of Harry Potter. His life had changed forever after receiving one of the biggest roles for a young boy in decades. After months of searching and thousands of auditions, there was still no one to play the role of the young wizard. One day however, after director Chris Columbus saw Daniel and his father Alan Radcliffe, he knew he would be the one. " Dan walked into the room and we all knew we had found Harry." Columbus says. Everyone who has worked with him believes that he is a natural screen actor, and perfect for the role of Harry Potter. Kate Harwood, who produced David Copperfield, says " He has a particular quality of naturalness and innocence. The camera really loves him and other children don't feel threatened by him. One normally dreads working with child actors, but in his case he was wondeful. We cast him for his special qualities of gentleness and watchfulness. He has those in spades. He has a great deal of charm and simplicity. He's very at ease with himself. He'll be terrfic as Harry Potter because of his great sense of fun. He's very lively and entergetic." Along with the sudden fame of Hollywood also comes concern. Daniel is already and international star, and many people aren't ready to deal with that kind of fame. Jamie Lee Curtis says, however " His Mother is really knowledgable about the film business. She knows the possible pitfalls that await him. I was impressed at how deeply she was concerned about subjecting him to the wild onslaught that will inevidably happen to him when Harry Potter is released." Daniel is now currently working on the fourth Harry Potter film (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) which is due to come out in 2005. |
