Dragonlance. |
This section is dedicated to my favourite series of books. Even though many authors have worked together, to bring these stories to life, the two most recognizable authors are Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Tracy Hickman was actually the man who got the idea for the world, that today is known as Dragonlance. A little background information: In 1979, Tracy Hickman was working as a movie theatre manager in Logan, Utah, which didn’t provide him, his wife and his child with more money than enough to get by. Then he created a world, where men and dragons fought side by side in an enormous war. As said by himself, this was only a concept back then. He lost his job and had trouble finding another one, then he choose to send two game modules he had designed together with his wife, to TSR inc. in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Tracy had heard, that they were willing to pay up to $500 for a good game module. Instead of buying his work, they offered him a job. Tracy and his family drove to Wisconsin and on the way he started to tell his wife about his visions, concerning this new job opportunity. It was a opportunity that could change his life forever… and it certainly did. It was with these visions and thoughts springing to life in his head, that the world which later should be known as Dragonlance, started to find its form and its life. Tracy’s visions did however not create the world alone, many other creative men and women has contributed with ideas to the design of the world, but it all started with Tracy Raye Hickman. |
The series includes over 80 books today and there are still more on the way. When I think of the amount of time, if have spent together with Tanis Half-Elven, Sturm Brightblade, Flint Fireforge, Tasselhoff Burrfoot, Caramon and Raistlin Majere and all the other fantastic and loveable characters in the Dragonlance novels. When I think of all the evenings and nights I have spent, sitting comfortably in my old chair in the corner, bathed in the light of a small bed lamp and silently reading, experiencing, dreaming and first of all enjoying every second of these wonderful adventures, it is with the outmost respect, that I speak of these books. I could never begin to describe the amount of quality in these books, I can only say out loud and clear, that if you have the slightest passion for adventure and roleplaying, these are the books, that you will love. Besides The Lord of The Rings (don’t need to say anything about this right ?), I personally think that the Dragonlance Novels are the best adventure books ever written. Iam not gonna mention every book in the series (+80 books), but I will mention a few of my favourites, if you want a complete list of the books, you can go to Dragonlance.com. The world Dragonlance, is also available as a Campaign Setting (a designed world in which you can play AD&D), the stories Tracy Hickman wrote, was actually partially based on a roleplaying adventure he wrote and played with a group of friends. |
My own feelings about the Dragonlance books: |
Some of the heroes in the Dragonlance Novels: Tanis Half-Elven: their leader, a good-hearted half-elf, who is a skilled warrior, even though he hate violence and battle. Tanis is tormented by love for two women, the beautiful and graceful elf, Laurana and the strong and passionate human, Kitiara. Sturm Brightblade: a noble Knight of Solamnia, eager to restore the once good reputation and honour of the knighthood. Raistlin Majere: a powerful and dubious magic-user. Dark mysteries lies hidden behind his hourglass-shaped eyes. Caramon Majere: Raistlin´s twin brother, a big and kind warrior, both loved and feared by his brother. He would at anytime give his life to save his brother. Flint Fireforge: a stubborn old dwarven fighter, he is almost like a father to the others. Like Tanis, Flint becomes one of the biggest heroes ever. Tasselhoff Burrfoot: a small humorous kender with a passion for “borrowing” items, like coins, jewellery and the like. Like pretty much all kender, he is immune to fear and followed by trouble wherever he goes. |
