Synopsis: Based very loosely on the Alan Moore graphic novel epic of the same name, this is the story of a group of characters drawn from famous works of literature, including Allan Quatermain (Connery), Captain Nemo (Shah), Rodney Skinner (a.k.a.The Invisible Man) (Curran), Mina Murray Harker (Wilson) and Dr. Jekyll (Flemyng), banding together to combat criminal undertakings of the highest order near the turn of the 19th century. Rather than remain true to the comic roots, the film also incorporates Tom Sawyer (West) and Dorian Gray (Townsend), in an apparent effort to keep the cast from being entirely without Americans, since the main market for this film is an American audience.  Beginning in London, "LXG" is in actuality an alternate-universe sort of story, taking place on the eve of of the dawn of the 20th century.
I cannot understand why this movie has gotten mediocre reviews.  Part of the problem I think is that the public at large is not familiar with Alan Moore or his work.  Yours truly is included.  However, I am an aficionado of alternate-history, so I can appreciate the premise of his story.  The viewer of this film must "suspend their disbelief" and accept the story for what it is in order to fully appreciate the plot.  If the viewer doesn not do this, they will never "get it".

The acting overall  isn't as good as I would have hoped, though Connery (of course) does an admirable job at the age of 73! The special effects are, of course, amazing!  One of my favourites was the rendition of Captain Nemo's submarine, the
Nautilus.  She is a truly massive vessel, larger than any modern submarine afloat today, and yes her looks are reminiscent of a British Royal Navy warship of the period (late Victorian age), complete with the raked bow!  I give "LXG" 8 1/2 out of 10 stars.
