At 28 years of age Joseph became the father of William Edward Ryker in Jefferson Co., IN, August 7, 1855. At 35 years of age Joseph became the father of John Newton Ryker in Indianapolis, IN, April 8, 1862. At 38 years of age Joseph became the father of Margaret Emma Ryker in California, MO, December 4, 1864. At 44 years of age Joseph became the father of Clifton James Ryker October 23, 1870. His biography written by my father, Parker LaBach: Joseph Holton Ryker, the son of Samuel Ryker, Jr. and Margaret Kincaid Holton, was born on the family farm near Canaan, Indiana, Oct. 8, 1826. Joseph Holton Ryker attended Hanover College, at Hanover, Indiana for a time in 1840 but had to withdraw to help his father who died in 1843, and take care of his mother and younger members of the family. He married Eliza Stewart McLeland, the daughter of Robert McLeland and Esther Benefiel, Nov. 2, 1848. After his marriage he remained on the family farm in the Canaan neighborhood until in 1878 he puchased the home on Ryker's Point across the valley south of the college. The Ryker's Point farm which he purchased near Hanover was across a deep ravine below Crowe Falls, and south of the college campus, in Sec. 13, T3N, R9E. Original patent to part of this land was issued to Christopher Harrison by the land office at Jeffersonville on Aug. 13, 1812. A patent to the SO 1/4 of Sec. 13 was issued to George Shannon at Jeffersonville on Dec. 30, 1815. Christopher Harrison sold his part to Capt. George Logan in 1817 and moved to Salem. The old brick house occupied by the Logan family for many years stood a short distance from the Ryker home. The Ryker house was a large brick English Colonial two story structure built by Prof. S. Harrison Thomson, of the Hanover College faculty, who surveyed the first "pike" from Madison to Hanover. The Ryker farm home, located on "Ryker's Point" was noted for having one of the most beautiful views of river and hills anywhere along the Ohio river. Most of the present Hanover cemetery was acquired from the western end of the Ryker farm. Joseph Holton Ryker bought the Ryker's Point farm with the expectation that he could also acquire some good river bottom land adjoining it, but this deal fell through. He found it necessary to spend a good deal of time away from home engaged in the timber buying business in order to support his family. He served in the 55th Indiana volunteers during the Civil War. He served mostly on guard duty in Kentucky, and saw no actual combat service; but exposure and other hadships of army life were too much for his none too rugged constitution and he remained in rather poor health for the remainder of his life, although he continued to work. Joseph Holton Ryker died in 1880. After his death, his widow supplemented her income from the farm by providing rooming accomodations for many Hanover College students, the last being her grandson, Carey Ryker Macdonnell, who stayed at the home on Ryker's Point during one year of preparatory work in the Academy and three of his four years of college, between 1908-1912.

Alexander McClelland National Pension No. 6620 Application Date: 7 July 1834 Rejected: 22 August 1836 Cause noted in 1858: not 6 months service
State of Kentucky ) County of Montgomery ) SS.
On this 7th day of July 1831+ personally appeared in open court before the Montgomery County Court, now sitting, Alexander McClelland, a resident of said county in the State aforesaid aged seventy two years who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
That he entered the service of the U. States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated: He was a volunteer from Fayette County, Pennsylvania, then the county of his residence. He entered the service as a private under Capt. Edward Stewart of the Pennsylvania Militia on the 1st of July 1781 as nearly as now recollects, and proceeded to the place of rendezvous on the Monongahela river, called in that day the New Store. Our company was a small one consisting of about thirty five men. We had no lieutenant. Our Ensign was a Mr. McDonald. We were also without a major belonging to the Militia, but we had a major of the Regiment by the name of Malis (Wales or Whaley?). Morgan was our Colonel and Clarke of Virginia our General. At this time I do not recollect Morgan's Christian name, but distinctly that he was known in camp by the name of old Cuff Morgan. From the New Store (where the troops remained something like two weeks preparing) we proceeded down the river in boats to M'Key's (Kerr's) Island opposite the mouth of Shisler Creek about three miles below Pittsburg. We remained here near two weeks and while there three regulars, whilst on the river a short distance from where the Army lay, were killed by the Indians. We then proceeded to Wheeling and were detained there for several days. At that place we were joined by some troops who came by land from the Red Stone Country, but a considerable number of our men deserted about the same time. From there we went down the Ohio to Louisville where we arrived on the 1st of August. While in Louisville Captain Tipton and Captain Chaplain of the Regulars were killed by the Indians. These officers, when attacked, were riding to a station in the neighborhood. They were tomahawked and scalped. I assisted in burying them. By the time we reached Louisville our numbers which when at Miker's Island must have exceeded six hundred men, was diminished by sickness and desertion to such a degree that Gen. Clarke found it impracticable to proceed on his intended expedition which was as understood by the troops to penetrate the Indian Country north of the Ohio as far, if possible, as Sandusky, and then to march by land to Pittsburg. The General, having asserted himself unsuccessfully to raise in Kentucky the forces necessary for his expedition, finally abandoned it, and resolved to disband his troops with the exception of the Regulars. The Officers of the Militia were accordingly discharged about the 1st of October and the privates permitted to return with an understanding that they should draw pay and rations up to the time of their actual arrival at home. The second day after I left Louisville I was taken ill of a fever from which I was compelled to stop. I lay nine weeks about a mile from Bardstown at a Mr. Thomas Cunningham's from whence I was removed by Thomas Norton to Bardstown where I was confined about the same length of time. This disease ultimately located itself in my left leg from which I experience pain and inconvenience even at this day. My affliction was such that I found myself wholly disabled from undertaking my journey homewards until about the 1st of October 1782, when I left Kentucky, and reached home on the 29th of the same month. A short time after my arrival at home, I received from Capt. Kannon, the successor of Capt. Stewart who had been killed in Crawford's defeat, my written discharge. This paper, to the best of my recollection, was forwarded to some Virginia Land Office, and has never been heard of by me since. I have no documentary evidence in my possession which will show, nor do I know of any person whose testimony I can procure, who can testify to my service, as above set forth.
1. I was born in Sussex County, New Jersey, about a hundred miles above Philadelphia, on the 16th of January 1762.
2. I have a record of my age now at my house taken from the family record of my father.
3. I was living in Fayette County in the State of Pennsylvania when called into service. A few years after the close of the Revolutionary War I removed to Fayette County in the State of Kentucky. Whence I removed to Montgomery County in the latter State in 1795 where I now reside, and have resided ever since.
4. As stated in the foregoing part of this statement, I entered the service as a volunteer.
5. I recollect the names of Captain Ben Whaley, Lieutenant James Paul, Major Wales, Captains Tipton and Capt. Chaplain and Colonel Crohith (?) as among the officers on the expedition.
6. I did, as above set forth, receive a discharge, and it was disposed of as previous stated.
7. I am known in my neighborhood by John McCormack and Samuel McCormack, who. can testify as to my veracity, and their belief of my services as a soldier of the Revolution.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the Agency of any State.
Sworn to and subscribed this day and year aforesaid.

Mr. Samuel McCormack, a Clergyman residing in Montgomery County and John McCormack residing in the same county, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Alexander McClelland, who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be seventy two years of age, that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in that opinion. (signed) Samuel N. McCormick John McCormick
Sworn and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.
And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion, after the investigation of the matter and after the interregation prescribed by the War Department that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states. And the Court further certifies that it appears to them that Samuel McCormack who has signed the preceding certificate is a clergyman resident in Montgomery County; that John McCormack who has also signed the same is a resident of the same county and is a credible person and that their statement is entitled to evidence.
I, Micajah Harrison, Clerk of the Montgomery County Court, do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said Court, in the matter of the application of Alexander McClelland for pension.
In testimony whereof, I unto set my hand and seal of office, this 7th July 1834.

From a newspaper clipping probably from an Indianapolis, Indiana newspaper about 1908 we learn Alexander McClelland was a page in the Continental Congress:
George Edward McLeland, who lives at 2526 North Jersey Street, does not have much use for a pen, inasmuch as he is not yet five years old, but he nevertheless has the most interesting pen in Indianapolis. It is the one with which Benjamin Franklin signed the Declaration of Independence. His grandfather, Capt. George W. McLeland received it from his grandfather, Alexander McLeland, who was a page in the Continental Congress. "Grandfather was a page in that historic Congress" said the youthful George's eight-six-year-old grandfather to-day, "and he was nicknamed 'Sandy' by its members. He gave me this pen which is made of a wild turkey feather, when I last saw him at our home down in Jefferson county, in 1831. You see, I was only a shaver, about as big as young George, there, when he gave it to me. Her told me that all the men who signed the Declaration of Independence did not use the same pen, and that when Franklin signed it he turned to him and said: 'Here, Sandy, you take this and keep it, and now run along and tell the sexton to ring the bell,' and he then, with the pen in his hand, hastened out to the old man at the bell, and the first music of liberty rang out on the air. My grandfather lived to be eighty-five years old and now that I have passed that milestone and my days are numbered, I pass the old relic down two generations. I came very near, however, turning it over to the old liberty bell people when the bell was in Indianapolis a few years ago." George Edward McLeland, the present owner of the pen, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McLeland. The McLelands are one of the best known of the old families of Jefferson County.
A transcription of the Will of Alexander McClelland provided to me by Charles Easterberg follows:
Montgomery County Kentucky State. This my last will and testament made this 4th day of June, one thousand eight-hundred and thirty six, being clothed in my right mind. 1st That John McCormick is to have the benefit of three hundred and forty three dollars and forty seven cent money in said McCormick hands, also the benefit of one note on George W. and John W. Tate for one hundred dollars due the first day of March next, for which the said McCormick is to pay six per cent interest on said money during the life of the subscriber and his wife, Elizabeth. Further, the said McCormick binds himself to appropriate the interest of said money to the support of said subscriber and wife during their lifetimes and should the interest be insufficient he is to appropriate such part of the principle as may be necessary for their benefit. It is also understood that the above $343.47 is to bear interest from the first day of March 1836. I do also will and bequeath to my daughter Ruth McCormick one bed and furniture at my decease. I further bequeath my Bible to my son Alexander McClelland. It is also my will and request that my wife Elizabeth is to have my mare her lifetime if she choose and should the mare have a colt next spring, my will is that John McCormick son of Alexander is to have it. Also I will and bequeath all my moveable effects (after my debts is paid) to my wife Elizabeth during her lifetime. In Witness hereof I hereunto set my hand and seal. Att

He was killed by Indians in the Long Run Massacre, also known as Floyd's Defeat, September 15, 1781 near Eastwood in Jefferson County, Kentucky. From The Kentucky Encyclopedia edited by John E. Kleber (University Press of Kentucky, 1992): LONG RUN MASSACRE. The Long Run massacre was a major incident in the series of battles in which early settlers in Kentucky fought Indians and their British allies on the western frontier during the Revolutionary War. Long Run is located near Eastwood in Jefferson County, Kentucky. In September 1781 Maj. Bland Ballard discovered Indian signs near Squire Boone's Painted Stone Station, near what is now Shelbyville. He warned the settlers there and at Beargrass Station to move to Lynn Station, which was a more secure area. For unknown reasons, Boone's and several other families delayed moving for two days. When they finally left the station on September 14, 1781, they were surrounded at Long Run Creek by a large party of Indians reinforced by British soldiers under the command of Capt. Alexander McKee. An estimated sixty people were killed by the Indians; only a handful, including Squire Boone, escaped. See Lou Catherine Ciore, "Long Run Massacre,'' Register 10 (Jan. 1912): 75-6.

98. Robert5 Futhey birth date unknown.
Robert Futhey had the following child:
+ 53 i. Isabella4 Futhey.
99. Andrew Lee5 Benefiel birth date unknown.
Andrew became the father of George Eli Benefiel in York Co., PA, December 25, 1759.
Andrew Lee Benefiel had the following child:
+ 54 i. George Eli4 Benefiel was born December 25, 1759.
100. George5 Buchanan (William6, John7) was born Romelt, County Donegal, Ireland 1721. George died 1818 in Jefferson Co., IN, at 97 years of age. His body was interred in Jefferson Co., IN.
He married twice. He married Esther Campbell in Ireland, ca 1763. Esther died ca 1773 in Ireland. Esther became the mother of Mary Buchanan in Ireland, March 15, 1764. Esther became the mother of William Buchanan in Ireland, 1771. Esther became the mother of Margaret Buchanan in Ireland, 1771. He married unknown ca 1774. Unknown became the mother of Wilson Buchanan in New York, 1775. Unknown became the mother of John Buchanan ca 1779. Unknown became the mother of Martha Buchanan 1781. Unknown became the mother of David Buchanan in PA, 1786.
At 42 years of age George became the father of Mary Buchanan in Ireland, March 15, 1764. At 50 years of age George became the father of William Buchanan in Ireland, 1771. At 50 years of age George became the father of Margaret Buchanan in Ireland, 1771. At 54 years of age George became the father of Wilson Buchanan in New York, 1775. George became the father of John Buchanan ca 1779. At 60 years of age George became the father of Martha Buchanan 1781. At 65 years of age George became the father of David Buchanan in PA, 1786. George Buchanan was born in County Donegal, Ireland about 1721. He married Esther Campbell in Ireland where she died. He immigrated to York County, Pennsylvania with his children about 1774. He remarried probably about 1774 and had more children. The name of his second wife is not known. In 1790 he moved to Kentucky from Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He is listed in the tax list for Woodford County, Kentucky in 1792, 1793, 1794, and 1795. He moved to Jefferson County, Indiana in 1813 where he died in 1818. He served as a Private in the 5th Pennsylvania Continental Line in the Revolutionary War. Some information about George Buchanan appears in the Biographies Forum of the Ripley County, Indiana USGenWeb project and the author is Bob Scott: George Buchanan, who came to Jefferson or Ripley Co., Ind., is the ancestor of hundreds and probably thousands of Southern Indiana residents. The DAR says that George came from York Co., Pa., and that he lived 1721-1818, married Esther Campbell and served in the Fourth Pennsylvania Continental line in the Revolutionary War. All of these facts might be true. But none are proven.
There is no documentation of where he was born, his age, when or who he married or where he lived. No one has identified George on any tax list or deeds. He could have been born in Ramelton, Donegal Co., Ireland, or in Pennsylvania. Research regarding his ancestry or siblings has been complicated by bogus family trees generated in the 1930s over the fraudulent "Buchanan Estate" in which many Buchanans were convinced they might be heirs to a great fortune.
A 1910 account by a grandson, named George W. Buchanan, states that the George lived to be 102 years old and that "grandmother" lived to be 101 and that they are buried in the McLaughlin Cemetery near Buchanan Station in Brown Township, Ripley Co. And while the 1850 Indiana census shows that two of George's children were born in Pennsylvania, it also shows that son Wilson Buchanan was born about 1775 in New York.
There are no deeds for this family in Cumberland, Huntingdon, Bedford Co. or Westmoreland Counties, Pa. Son-in-law George Benefiel served in the Revolutionary War from Cumberland Co., but lived in modern Franklin Co. A George Buchanan, who owned land in Fannett Township in Franklin Co. 1778-1781, might be our George.
Most records say that George Buchanan married Esther Campbell. There is at least circumstantial evidence for this marriage. Daughter Mary Buchanan Benefiel had a daughter, Esther Campbell Benefiel.
The family lived in Westmoreland Co., Pa., after the Revolution and moved to the Paris, Ky., area about 1790, according to the biography of grandson Jacob Buchanan. The earliest reliable record of the family in Kentucky comes on 28 Jan. 1795 when George's son Wilson Buchanan married in Bourbon Co. Son William Buchanan may be the William on the 1795 Scott Co. tax list as George Benefiel is on that same list. An earlier record is that of Hugh Cowen who married Mary or Margaret Buchanan on 9 Oct. 1794 in Bourbon Co. Transcriptions differ and the original bond has not been found.
George and his four sons appear on no Bourbon tax lists (although the Benefiels and McLaughlins appear there.) There are no Bourbon deeds for any members of the family except the McLaughlins. There is a George Buchanan, who could be our man, and a John Buchanan on Woodford Co. tax lists 1792-1795, but there are no Buchanan deeds in Woodford Co.
Son Wilson Buchanan appears on the Franklin Co. tax list of 22 March 1797. All four Buchanan brothers, William, Wilson, John and David, along with brother-in-law Hugh Cowen, appear Aug. 10 1801 on the Franklin Co. tax list, living on Benson Creek. But no Franklin Co. deeds involve this family.
Illinois researchers say that about 1800 the Buchanans moved to a place 20 miles upstream from Madison on the Ohio River. This is consistent with Federal land records that show that John Buchanan bought land on 10 Sept.1804 near the site of modern Florence, Switzerland Co.
In 1807, Wilson and John Buchanan are listed on the territorial census for Dearborn Co., which then included Switzerland Co. The family probably moved to the border of Jefferson and Ripley Co. about Aug. 25,1809 when John Buchanan purchased the SE1/4 Section 34 Twp. 6N Range 11E and the SW1/4 Section 25 in what became Brown Township.
The 1910 Madison Courier article gives the best authority for George's family: George W. Buchanan listed his uncles, John and William Buchanan. George W. also listed Uncle George Benefiel, Uncle George McLaughlin and cousin William McLaughlin.
Another element in Buchanan history is the Buchanan Station, the blockhouse, that the family is reported to have erected on its land because of Indian trouble. The date of its construction is usually given as occurring 1813 in Brown Twp., Ripley Co., not far from the Jefferson Co. border. However, the 1860s, Perret Dufour reports orders given to David Hillis, whose militia company was charged marching with constructing the block house that became known as Buchanan station. Hillis' orders were dated May 10, 1812. Dufour said that Hillis constructed the fort without delay.
All branches of the family maintain the tradition that George was a Revolutionary War soldier. The DAR lists George's service in the Fourth Pennsylvania 1778-1781 and cites the Pennsylvania Archives as proof. But the Archives only show that A George Buchanan served in that unit. No age or town is given. Federal records show that in 1786 an Ezekiel and Elizabeth Buchanan were paid for services of George Buchanan in the Fourth in Pennsylvania. They were paid with interest accuring from Jan. 1, 1781. Why were these two people paid and not the soldier? I can only conclude that these two were heirs of a man who died by 1786.
Children of George Buchanan 1. Mary Buchanan 19 March 1764-21 May 1857 died in Jefferson Co., Ind., and is buried in the Jefferson Church Cem., along with her husband, George Eli Benefiel 25 Dec. 1759-1 April 1832. The family moved to Indiana shortly after daughter Esther married Robert McLelland on 3 January 1814 in Clark Co., Ky. 2. Margaret Buchanan 1771-1837. Dates are from the DAR. She is probably the Margaret Buchanan (some transcriptions say Mary) who married Hugh Cowen on 9 Oct. 1794 in Bourbon Co. 3. William Buchanan 1771-Feb. 1845 He is buried in a small family cemetery several hundred feet west of Buchanan Station. His stone was moved to the Buchanan family cemetery opposite the recreated fort sometime between 1972 and 1984. William was married before 1796, probably in Kentucky, as his oldest son, William H. Buchanan was born that year. He may have been the William who married Fanny Buchanan in 29 May 1801 in Franklin Co., Ky. He is probably the William who married Catherine Yount 1813 in Jefferson Co. William's estate was probated in Ripley Co. His widow, Elizabeth's (Elizabeth, perhaps Catherine Elizabeth Yount?) estate in Jefferson. 4. Wilson Buchanan 1774/75-19 April 1851 Buried in the Buchanan Cemetery, Wilson married Rebecca Lockridge in 1795 in Bourbon Co., Ky. Wilson probably married Hannah Ricketts, 1790-13 Feb. 1853 in Dearborn Co., Ind., in 1809. However, Dearborn records were destroyed by fire in 1826. 5. John Buchanan 1779-6 May 1847, buried Old Bethel Cem., Craig Twp., Switzerland Co. He left a will in Switzerland Co. John had a first marriage, possibly to Tabitha Freeman. John married 2nd on 6 May 1813 in Jefferson Co., Rachel Short. 6. Martha E. Buchanan 1780-16 Nov. 1833 She m. George McLaughlin 29 Dec. 1773-5 April 1846. Both buried in McLaughlin Cem. west of the fort, but the stones were removed to the Buchanan family cemetery between 1972 and 1984. 7. David Buchanan b. 1785/86 in Pennsylvania, probably died by 1860. According to the 1850 census in Brown Twp., he was age 64, born in Pennsylvania. His first marrige has not been discovered, but three of his children were born before 1814 when he married Nancy Buchanan, 1786/87-after 1880. Her relationship, if any, is unknown. 8. George Buchanan. Stayed in Pennsylvania, unmarried, according to Illinois family researchers. 9. Jane Buchanan m _______ Read, mother of poet Thomas Buchanan Read. This daughter is also listed by Illinois family researchers.
George Buchanan and Esther Campbell had the following children:
101 i. Jean4 Buchanan. She married James Read.
+ 66 iii. Mary Buchanan was born March 15, 1764.
103 iv. William Buchanan was born in Ireland 1771. William died February 1845 at 73 years of age. His body was interred in Buchanan cemetery, Ripley Co., IN. He married twice. He married Elizabeth Barker ca 1795. He married Catherine Yount in Jefferson Co., IN, 1813. His biogrpahy written by Bob Scott found on the Biographies Forum of the Ripley County, Indiana USGenWeb site: William BUCHANAN was a pioneering farmer, who came to the border area of Jefferson and Ripley Counties in 1809. He was one of four sons of Rev. War Soldier George BUCHANAN. William died in February 1845, aged 73 years 11 months, according to his tombstone. He is buried in a small family cemetery several hundred feet southwest of Buchanan Station. However, his tombstone and one for a granddaughter were moved to the nearby Buchanan Family Cemetery between 1972 and 1984. It is likely that he is the William BUCHANAN who is on the 1795 tax list for Scott Co., Ky. Brother-in-law George BENEFIEL is also on that list. William was married before1796 as his oldest son, William H. Buchanan, was born in Kentucky that year. He may have been the William who married Fanny Buchanan in 1801 in Franklin Co., Ky. Two Wilson Buchanans are listed 22 May 1797 on the Woodford Co., tax list, but this probably should have been William and Wilson. In 1801, William and his three brothers are all listed on the Franklin Co. tax list with William owning three horses. The four disappear from Kentucky records by 1802 and had probably moved to the area of modern Florence, Switzerland Co., where brother John purchased land in 1804. John then purchased land in Ripley Co. on the Jefferson Co., border in 1809. William and brother Wilson were fined in Jefferson Co. for assaults occurring in that county in 1812. William then purchased 60 acres in Section 34 Twp. 6N Range 11E in Ripley Co. from brother John on 25 Feb. 1819. His marriages have not been resolved. A William Buchanan, presumably this one, married Catherine Yount 1813 in Jefferson Co. However, William's widow as listed in Ripley Co. probate records is listed in Elizabeth and her probate record in 1848 in Jefferson Co. lists the same five children. One record says that William married Elizabeth Barber, but offers no proof. The Yount family, of German origin, may have followed the German custom in children had a saints name as first name and a middle name for everyday use. So his widow may have been Catherine Elizabeth YOUNT. The probate of William's estate in Ripley Co. includes a map that shows the division of his land. His estate was probated in Ripley Co.; his widow's will was probated in 1848 in Jefferson. Both estates name the same six children.
Children of William Buchanan 1. WILLIAM H. BUCHANAN 22 Aug. 1796-8 May 1877, buried Jefferson Church Cem. He was born in Kentucky according to the 1850 census. He m. 1st Jane Buchanan, his cousin, on 24 Mar. 1819 in Ripley Co. William owned land in the Barbersville area in Jefferson Co. 2. MARGARET BUCHANAN ca. 1801-ca. 1886 (age 49, 185 census) She m. 15 Dec. 1825 in Ripley Co., William Cowen, ca. 1801-18 Oct. 1882 They lived 1850 Brown Twp., 1860 Otter Creek Twp. John Cowen March 1807-27 Jan. 1887, born Bourbon Co., died Wells Twp., Rice Co., Minn., both buried Maple Lawn Cem., Faribault, Minn. His biography in the History of Rice Co., published in 1882, gives birth dates. It says he came to Indiana in 1833, so he may not be William Cowen's brother. The family lived in winter of 1854/55 in Des Moines Co., Iowa, then moved to Minnesota. They lived 1870 Wells Twp. Rice Co., Minn 4. MARY BUCHANAN 1814-18 Mar. 1841, buried Jefferson Church Cem. She m. 27 Aug. 1835 in Ripley Co., Robert Means He lived 1850 Brown Twp. (age 36) His second wife was named Elizabeth. This is probably Elizabeth Bales. She and Robert received a license in Jefferson Co. on 21 Apr. 1842. 5. MARTHA BUCHANAN died May 1847 She m. 23 Sept. 1826 in Ripley Co., John Hamilton, who died in May 1846. 104 v. Margaret Buchanan was born in Ireland 1771. Margaret died 1837 at 66 years of age. She married Hugh Cowen in Bourbon Co., KY, October 9, 1794.
George Buchanan and unknown had the following children:
105 vi. Wilson Buchanan was born in New York 1775. Wilson died April 19, 1851 in IN, at 75 years of age. His body was interred in Buchanan cemetery, Ripley Co., IN. He married twice. He married Hannah Kelso. He married Rebecca Lockridge in Bourbon Co., KY, 1795. His biography written by Bob Scott taken from the Biographies Forum of the Ripley County, Indiana USGenWeb site: Wilson Buchanan, 1774/75-19 April 1851 (age 76), was one of four pioneering brothers who came to the border area of Ripley Co. and Jefferson Co., Ind., in 1809, and who lent their family name to a fort built in Brown Township Ripley Co. Wilson was born in New York, according to the 1850 Brown Twp. Census. Otherwise, his earliest official record comes on 28 Jan. 1795 when he signed a marriage bond in Bourbon Co., Ky., for his marriage to Rebecca Lockridge (Lauherage on the bond.)
Wilson next appears on 22 March 1797 in the Woodford Co., Ky., tax list and then 1801 in Franklin Co. Wilson and his three brothers vanish from Kentucky records in 1802. They probably moved to the area near modern Florence, Switzerland Co., where brother John purchased government land in 1804. Wilson is recorded in 1807 in the territorial census for Dearborn Co., which then included Switzerland Co.
Wilson probably married Hannah Ricketts, 1790-13 Feb. 1853 in Dearborn Co., Ind., in 1809. However, Dearborn records were destroyed by fire in 1826. This marriage is proved by the probate the estate of Hannah's father, Robert Ricketts, in Ohio Co., Ind.
The brothers probably moved to Ripley Co. when John Buchanan purchased land on Aug. 25, 1809. in the SE1/4 Section 34 Twp. 6N Range 11E. This land is in Brown Twp. and borders Shelby Twp., Jefferson Co. Wilson purchased this land from John on Feb. 27, 1819. Wilson purchased additional tracts from the government in both counties. In 1812, Wilson and brother William were fined for assaults tht occurred in what was then Jefferson Co. In 1819, Wilson also served the first grand jury in Ripley Co.
Wilson's land became the site of a fort built in 1812 because of Indian troubles. Although modern accounts usually state the fort was built in May 1813, this appears to be in error. Perret Dufour, writing in the 1870s, reported that Lt. Col. David Hillis ordered Elisha Golay to build a block house on the north line of Jefferson Co. This order was given on May 15, 1812. Golay was ordered to proceed without delay, according to Dufour, who wrote that this blockhouse was known as Buchanan's Station.
Although he did not leave a will, Wilson's children are documented. Three died young: Robert, Vienna and Rebecca. These were recorded in Jefferson Co. cemetery records by Mary Hill with the inscriptions showing all three as children of W&H Buchanan. An estate settlement in Ripley Co. (Complete Record G p. 435) on 28 Jan. 1854 lists 11 surviving heirs; and the surviving grandchildren of the three deceased children.
While most of the surviving children are called heirs, not children, the equal division of the estate should be considered proof that they were children. The three deceased heirs, William Buchanan, Patsy Hankins, Sarah Favors, are specifically called children of Wilson Buchanan, the three deceased children are specifically cited as children of Wilson.
The probate of Robert Ricketts' estate in Ohio Co., Ind., proves that nine of Wilson's 14 children who survived to adulthood were by Hannah. Eight are listed in the probate record, while on Feb. 24, 1855, the ninth, David Buchanan, sold a lot of Ricketts' land that had been set off in a lottery to the heirs.
Children of Wilson Buchanan and Rebecca Lockridge 1. John Henry Buchanan b. 1795/96 (aged 54 in 1850, twin?) He married 14 Sept. 1825 in Ripley Co., Octavia Tabitha Schaffer. They lived 1850 in Gallatin Co., Ky. John died by 1860 as Tabitha and her children had moved to Otter Creek Twp., Ripley Co. 2. Mary (Polly) Buchanan b. 1795/96 (aged 54 in 1850, twin?) Susannah Buchanan 26 Nov. 1811-26 Nov. 1882. Born in Indiana, she died in Ripley Co. She married 1st 1831 in Ripley Co., Andrew G. Risk 22 Sept. 1810-2 Dec. 1842. 106 vii. John Buchanan was born ca 1779. John died May 6, 1847 Switzerland Co., IN, at 67 years of age. His body was interred in Old Bethel Cemetery, Switzerland Co., IN. He married twice. He married Eliza Short. He married Rachel Short in Jefferson Co., IN, May 6, 1813. His biography written by Bob Scott found on the Biographies Forum of the Ripley County, Indiana USGenWeb site: John Buchanan ca 1779-6 May 1847, farmer and merchant, was one of the earliest land purchasers in Switzerland Co. and patented the first tract in Ripley Co.
The son of Revolutionary War Soldier George Buchanan, John was probably born in central Pennsylvania; moved with his family to Westmoreland Co., Pa., after the revolution and then to the Blue Grass Region of Kentucky about 1790. John's first record comes in 1801 when he and three brothers lived on Benson Creek in Franklin Co., Ky. The four brothers probably moved to Indiana in 1802. John Buchanan of Dearborn Co., Ind., along with partner William Phillips, purchased several hundred acres in September 1804 near modern Florence, Switzerland Co., Ind. John and wife, Rachel, then living in Jefferson Co., sold this tract in 1815.
John is listed in the 1807 Indiana territorial census in Dearborn Co., and voted in an 1809 Dearborn Co. election. Next, John purchased two quarter sections in what is now Brown Township, Ripley Co. on the Jefferson Co. border on Aug. 25, 1809. On Sept. 5, 1815, John purchased land from his father-in-law, Jacob Short, on the Indian-Kentuck Creek, just downstream from Manville in Milton Twp., Jefferson Co.
John's movements have not been completely determined, but are suggested by the marriages of his daughters. Until 1940, Indiana law required marriages to occur in the county of the bride's residence. His daughters were married as follows: Nancy, 1816 in Jefferson Co; Dorcas/Tolitha, 1822, Switzerland Co.; Elizabeth, 1831, Decatur Co.; Eliza, 1832, Switzerland Co. Two other children, son, Wilson, and daughter, Nancy Short, are both buried near Greensburg.
Whatever the involvement in Decatur Co., residence there was brief. John and Rachel Buchanan were members of the Manville Christian Church in Milton Township, by 1836. They moved to Craig Township, Switzerland Co. about the time he purchased land and property on the road from Port William (Carrollton, Ky.) to Versailles on 17 Dec. 1838. This purchase included two stores and inventory. Rachel appears a membership of the Braytown Christian Church founded about this time.
John's first marriage is often listed as being to Tabitha Freeman. John is named as a son-in-law in will of Elisha Freeman, recorded in Hardin Co., Ky., and also in Jefferson Co., Ind., on 10 April 1818. The will does not give the daughter's first name. But since Freeman lived in Lincoln and Garrard Counties, and this group of Buchanans did not, the will may refer to another John Buchanan.
John's marriage to Rachel Short on 6 May 1813 in Jefferson Co. John and his inlaws, Jacob and Elizabeth Short, are all buried in the Old Bethel Cemetery in Craig Township. Old Bethel was a Baptist Church that was vanished before the formation of nearby Spring Branch Church formed in 1853. Rachel lived 1850 in Craig Township with her father, Jacob Short, in her household. She bequeathed her entire property for the education of youngest son, George A. Buchanan, at Bethany College in Virginia. John's will in Switzerland Co. favors children of the second marriage.
Children of John Buchanan and Tabitha Freeman (?) 1. Martha Buchanan b. 1792/93 (age 57 1850 census) She m. 8 July 1819 in Jefferson Co., George Henry. Family lived 1850 in Brown Co., Ind. Her age in 1850 must have been copied wrong or this is the wrong couple. John would have been about 13 in 1792. 2. Wilson Buchanan 1795-25 July 1833 He m. 9 Jan. 1817 in Jefferson Co,. Zellah Forester, died 23 June 1843, both buried Star Baptist Church Cem., Greensburg. 3. Nancy Buchanan ca. 20 Dec. 1799-17 Nov. 1855, buried Star Baptist Church Greensburg, Ind. 108 ix. David Buchanan was born in PA 1786. David died ca 1855. He married twice. He married unknown ca 1808. He married Nancy Buchanan 1814. Nancy was born ca 1786. Nancy died after 1880. His biography written by Bob Scott taken from the Biographies Forum of the Ripley County, Indiana USGenWeb site: David BUCHANAN in one of four pioneering brothers who came to the border of Jefferson and Ripley Counties in 1809 and whose family name is linked to Buchanan Station, the fort built in Brown Twp. Less is known about David than his brothers Wilson, who lived in Brown Twp., William, who lived in Shelby Twp., Jefferson Co., and John, who lived in Decatur, Jefferson, and Switzerland Cos. The four were sons of Revolutionary War soldier George BUCHANAN. John purchased land on the county border in 1809 and sold sections to his brothers.
David was born about 1785/86 in Pennsylvania. This is based in the 1850 census for Brown Twp., which lists his age as 64. However, the DAR has historically listed him as born about 1777. Although the 1830 and 1840 censuses do not list ages, they show the oldest male in David's household as being younger than the oldest male in his brother's household by one age category, consistent with the age given in the 1850 census. He died by 1860 and Violet Toph's cemetery transcriptions speculate that a stone marked "D.B" in Salem Cemetery in Brown Twp. is the soldier's stone.
Given the age of his children, David had a first marriage, which has not yet been discovered. In 1814, he married Nancy BUCHANAN in Jefferson Co. Her relationship, if any, is unknown. Some descendants report she is daughter of an Alexander BUCHANAN, but proof has not been supplied to this writer. Nancy was born 1786/87 according to her age in the 1850 census. She was alive in 1880 Brown Twp., age 96, (hence born 1773/74 by this report) born Virginia. She living with George W. Buchanan, who was son of Joshua BUCHANAN, born ca. 1802. Joshua was possibly Nancy's brother. Joshua had married Rebecca McLAUGHLIN, a niece of David's.
As Nancy was at least 27 when she married David the possibility she may have been previously married. She was one of six original members of Brushy Fork Baptist Church in Sept. 1819 and received a letter of dismission on the 3rd Saturday in December 1861. David does not appear Brushy Fork records. Membership lists for Salem Christian Church (now called Cross Plains Church of Christ) do not exist for this period.
David purchased 65 acres from brother John in Ripley Co. on 16 Oct. 1829. This land was in Brown Township in the East part of the SE1/4 Section 31 Twp. 6N Range 11E for $165. He is probably the David who sold the land to son, William, on 6 March 1854 and may be the David who sold another 25 acres to William on 31 Jan. 1859.
Of David's children only one, William W., is truly documented. Family traditions list six children. Three of these--John, William W. and Hannah--are buried at Salem Cem. There is a Henry Buchanan buried next to John at Salem. Some believe he is also David's son, but family traditions do not list him.
