I Thought I Knew You

FIRST LINE CHALLENGE

        "I thought I knew you. I guess I really don't."
Lewis lifted his head up from his hands and his gaze from the kitchen table as Drew stated this.
"What?" he asked in surprise.
"You heard me," Drew said accusingly as he folded his arms, "I thought you would never, ever, pull something like this."
Lewis opened his mouth, about to say something, then stopped as it dawned on him what Drew was talking about.

Kate.  Lewis had attempted to kiss her last night.  He silently smacked himself for not realizing that instantly.

"Look, Drew I..." Lewis started.
"Don't." Drew held up his hand, "Don't even try to make excuses.  She's the girl of my dreams, what were you thinking!  Cheep tramp or not, she's always been that to me.  You, as my best friend, should know better.  Especially since she isn't anything to you but an opportunity for a piece of ass."  Drew's voice had reached the point of yelling now.
"That is not true!" Lewis shouted back defensively, "I feel more for her than that and you know it."
"Please, not from the way you treat her.  Hitting on her constantly, grabbing her ass that one time," Lewis looked at him in surprise and Drew continued, "Don't think I didn't catch that.  We were glowing in the dark, it was a little difficult to miss.
Anyway, you've been 'attempting' to flirt with her for the longest time.  Now that I think about it, why didn't I see this sooner?  Oh yeah, I thought you would be a decent friend and realize how much she still means to me."
"I do realize that." Lewis sighed.
"Then what was going through your head last night?" Drew asked in frustration, his voice practically screeching.

In an attempt to answer the question, Lewis took himself to last night...

"Thanks for the ride Lewis." Kate grinned as she and Lewis drove home from the Warsaw.
"It's no problem.  Any excuse to spend a little extra time with my favorite ray of sunshine." Lewis said with a seductive smile.  Kate simply rolled her eyes and looked out the window.
"I thought you weren't going to try and top 'Angel Drawers'." She said with slight disgust.
"I wasn't trying to.  Why, did I?"
Kate thought for a minute.
"Nah."
Lewis exhaled sharply before concentrating back on the road.  They were silent for the rest of the ride until they got to Kate's apartment building.
"Okay, Lewis.  You can let me out now."
Lewis looked at Kate for a few seconds, then nodded slowly, remembering that the doors were still locked.  As he put his hand on the button, he looked at her again.  It was then that the tightness in Lewis' jeans reminded him how close this beautiful girl was to him.  Not even an arm's length away.  Close enough for him to...
"Lewis, what the hell?!"
Lewis opened his eyes quickly.  He had been so wrapped up in his thoughts, he didn't realize he tried to act on them.  He found his face inches from Kate's, close enough for him to see the angry expression on her face in detail and hear her voice in surround-sound stereo.  Humbly, he backed away and unlocked the door for her.  Angrily, she slammed the car door and walked quickly into the night.

"Lewis!"
Drew's shout brought Lewis back from his memory.
"Huh?"
"You haven't answered my question yet." Drew scolded.
Lewis took a second to remember.  Right, what was going through his head.
"It's just...she was so close to me, I had to.  It just...felt right at the time.  I had wanted to for a long time, and...I didn't..."
"Lewis." Drew said, stopping his train of thought, "are you in love with her?"
"I...I guess...yeah." Lewis said with a shrug.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, seriously."
"Love as in you could see yourself spending the rest of your life with her, not just boinking her one night and forgetting about it?"
"Well, I haven't gotten as far as the rest of my life yet, but..."
"Well think about it damnit!  Because if you aren't good to her, I'm going to have to kick your ass."
Lewis looked at Drew and simply raised his eyebrows.
"Well, attempt anyway."
They both shared a chuckle over this before Lewis fully digested what Drew had said.
"Wait a minute.  You were talking like I was going to ask her out or something."
"You are." Drew stated matter-of-factly.
"Says who?"
"If you're going to make a move on the woman of my dreams, then confess your undying love for her to me, you're going to follow through with it, damnit.  Because if you don't talk to her about it, I will.  Now go talk to her." Drew said as he motioned to where Kate sat in the living room.  Lewis got up and went to go into the room, then turned around suddenly.
"Drew..."
"Go.  Who cares what she says.  Just go."
With a shy smile to his friend, Lewis walked into the other room and sat next to Kate on the couch.  As they talked, Drew leaned against the doorway to his kitchen.  Quietly, he thought to himself...

I don't know him as well as I thought, do I?
