I gave my calico cat, Fuzzball a final pat and gazed intently at he computer screen in front of me. Okay, so now what? I asked myself, frustrated at my lack of computer skills. Ashley had given me a list of we sites to check out, sort of a test to see if I could handle the internet myself. So far, I wasn't making out very good, and was relying on Kenzie more than she liked. Now I had come to one site that looked pretty official. I looked at the main page, and decided to go to the audio page and download a hoe-down. While it was
downloading, I clicked into the chat. It asked for a screen name, and I was lost again.
"Kenzie, what's a screen name?" I called out to the adjoining room. An audible sigh was heard, and Kenzie's exasperated voice piped up, "Daddy, it's like a nick name, what you want people online to know you by."
"Oh, okay, thanks!" I answered and turned back to the screen. Screen name…Screen name… What the hell, I thought to myself and carefully picked out "RStiles" and hit enter. Immediately, another window popped up, the chat room opened up. The topic of the room was "Pudding Wars!!" and people were "throwing pudding" at each other. A few seconds later, a chorus of "Hey Ryan!"'s and "Hi Ry!"'s and one "ocelotwl pounces on Ryan" popped up on the screen.
A cold sweat broke out on my neck. My hands trembled over the keyboard. What do I do? I thought to myself frantically. Say hi, I guess. I tentatively picked out "hi" and hit enter. The download completed, and I clicked on it and turned up my speakers, listening to the hoe-down.
"At least I know how to do that!" I thought triumphantly.
Another screen popped up. "Hello Ryan, are you new here?" came a message form ocelotwl.
"yes." I carefully typed.
`Welcome to the chat then! We're about to play Questions Only, want to join?"
It sounded inviting, but I had other sites to go to. "No thanks, I've got to go," I replied.
"Okay then, come back anytime!" cam ocelotwl's reply.
"Bye," and I exited the screen.
Next on the list was www.Ebay.com "It's and auction site. Try searching for `Whose Line'" was Ashley's advice. I deftly typed in the address and watched it load. I was getting the hang of this. I did a search for Whose Line, and there were a few results listed.
Among other things was "Brad Sherwood's boxer briefs, worn", "Colin's stone" from some guy named Tim, and a pair of my shoes, the leopard print ones. I remember giving away a pair to a charity, and they were auctioning them off online. Already they were at $230.00 and there were still three days left! I started onto another site when Sammy walked in.
"Will you come scooter with me, Daddy?" he asked solemnly,
holding up his blue lazor scooter.
"Sure Sammy, just give me a second." Sammy picked up Fuzzball from my lap and walked out of the room. On screen, I noticed another object. Curious, I opened it up. It was a "hand-painted pic of a panda, painted by Drew Carey."
Grinning, I made a mental note to ask Drew about it. All of a sudden, a sparkly green rubber ball flew through the air and bounced off the back of my head. I turned around to see Sammy and Kenzie standing at the door, looking at the ceiling and whistling innocently.
"Alright, who threw that?" I demanded, grinning.
Sammy started laughing. "It was Kenzie! She threw it!" He squealed.
Kenzie turned to her brother.
"You goober! You said you wouldn't tell!" She shrieked, chasing her
brother out of the room. I exited the browser and disconnected from
the net, and chased after Kenzie.
