NZ Timeline 925 - 1840 AD


925 NZ discovered by the polynesian navigator, Kupe in the MATAHORUA canoe. He names it Aotearoa (Land of the Birds) later mistranslated as Land of the Long White Cloud.
~ Moriori - Te Rakiroa, of the Wheteina tribe, Hawa'iki, has his canoe, the RANGI HOUA, smashed against the rocks at Rekohu (Chatham Islands).
~ Moriori - Mihiti and Moe, of the Wheteina tribe in Hawa'iki, settle on Rekohu after travelling in their canoes, the RANGI MATA & the OROPUKE, respectively. A group of earlier people are there, they are descended from Te Aomarama and Rongomaiwhenua. Nunukuwhenua's Law is enforced.
1150 Toitehuatahi (Toikairakau), leaves Pikoipikoiwhiti, Hawa'iki and settles in Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) - searching for his missing grandsons.
1150 Whatonga and Mahutonga (Toi's grandsons) arrive in North Cape from Pikoipikoiwhiti, Hawa'iki in the KURAHAUPO (Te Hawai), later settling in Maketu. The KURAHAUPO (Te Hawai) is returned to Hawa'iki.
1150~1350 The following canoes travelled to NZ and their crew settled here: 

KAHUTARA , TAIKORIA, OKOKI, KURAHAUPO (Te Hawai), TAHATUNA, HOROUTA, TE ARATAWHAO, TE MAMARU, ARAITEURU, MOTUMOTUAHI, PANGATORU, WAKARINGARINGA, RINGAUAMUTU, TAIREA, ARIKIMAITAI, RANGIMATORU, NUKUTERE (whale), HOROUTA, KURAHAUPO (II), TE RIRINO, AOTEA, MATAATUA (Toroa), TAINUI, PUKATEAWANUI, TE ARAWA, TOKOMARU, TAKITIMU, KARAERAE, MAHUHU, MAMARI, TE RUAKARAMEA, WAIPAPA, TE RIUKAKARA, MOEKAKARA, TE WAKATUWHENUA, and KAHU. (NB: highlighted canoes settled around Auckland) Some of the canoes report finding other settlers here before them, they are called the Tangata Whenua.

1642  Abel Tasman, the first european to discover NZ, calls it Staten Landt and annexes it for Holland.
1769  Captain Cook lands at Gisborne on the ENDEAVOUR and hoists the Union Jack at Mercury Bay, takes possession on behalf of King George III. Two months later, the Frenchman, De Surville, lands at Doubtless Bay.
1770  Captain Cook lands at Queen Charlotte Sound, where the British flag is hoisted again, and possession of NZ taken again.
1772  Marion du Fresne lands at the Bay of Islands and annexes NZ as France Australe in the name of King Louis XV of France.
1773  Cook returns with the ships RESOLUTION and ADVENTURE. Lands at Queen Charlotte Sound. Two sheep put ashore but survive only a few days.
1791  Captain Broughton in HMS CHATHAM finds and renames Rekohu as the Chatham Islands. The first whaling ship arrives, WILLIAM AND ANNE.
1792  First sealing gang arrives at Dusky Sound.
1793  Spanish navigator, Malaspina, visits Dusky Sound.
1814  Arrival of Samuel Marsden (Anglican) at the Bay of Islands. Introduction of animals. First sermon preached on Christmas Day.
1815  Thomas King is the first european child born in NZ.
1816  Thomas Kendall opens first european-style school for Maori children.
1819  Raids on Taranaki and Port Nicholson by Te Rauparaha and Nene.
1820  Hongi Hika, Ngapuhi chief, visits England's King George IV.
1821  Hongi Hika begin's war with muskets. Two thousand are killed at Tamaki.
1823  Rev. Samuel Leigh established Wesleyan Methodist Mission at Whangaroa Harbour. Jurisdiction of New South Wales Courts of Justice extended to British subjects in NZ.
1825  First attempt at colonisation with 60 immigrants aboard ROSANNA. Only four stayed.
1827  French Pass, Croisilles Harbour and Waitemata Harbour charted by Dumont D'Urville aboard ASTROLABE. Mission station at Whangaroa destroyed by Hongi Hika's forces.
1830  Agricultural mission and school established at Waimate North.
1833  James Busby, appointed British Resident in NZ in 1832, arrives at Bay of Islands.
1834  British troops clash with maoris in the capture of Waimate Pa, Taranaki. Merino sheep farm established by James Bell Wright on Mana Island. James Busby, presents a NZ's first flag to North Auckland chiefs. 140 German immigrants settle in Nelson.
1835  First wool export to Sydney. Charles Darwin and Robert FitzRoy visit (later Governor of NZ). Chatham Islands invaded by Ngati Awa tribes. Declaration of Independence by the Tribes of NZ, organised by Busby.
1836  New Testament printed in Maori by Colenso.
1837  Hobson first visits NZ to protect europeans from maori fighting. Self-styled Sovereign Chief of NZ, the frenchman, Baron de Thierry, arrives at Hokianga.
1838  New Zealand Colonisation Company founded. Bishop Pompallier forms Catholic Mission at Hokianga. James Clendon becomes first United States Consul in NZ.
1839  Governor of New South Wales given jurisdiction over British subjects in NZ. Arrival in Petone of Colonel William Wakefield of the New Zealand Company.
1840  'First' european settlers arrive at Port Nicholson aboard AURORA and ORIENTAL. Treaty of Waitangi signed. Settlements formed at Akaroa and Canterbury Plains. Arrival of John Logan Campbell at Coromandel. Inauguration of the town of Auckland with a regatta on Waitemata Harbour. The New Zealand Act passed by the Imperial Parliament. By Royal Charter Queen Victoria names the islands, New Leinster (Stewart Island), New Munster (South Island) and New Ulster (North Island)!
