DUODONAL SWITCH
and
BILIOPANCREATIC DIVERSION
A Duodonal Switch with BILIOPANCREATIC DIVERSION (DS/BPD or just DS) has similar properties to an RNY procedure, in that both decrease food intake and both provide a malabsorbtive component.  A BPD is a surgery unto it's own and the DS and BPD was first combined in 1988.

In a DS surgery, a partial gastrectomy, or removal of stomach tissue from the larger curvature of the stomach, is performed.  This leaves the remaining stomach much smaller and decreases food intake.  Unlike the RNY, the DS leaves the PYLORIC SPHINCTER (the valve between the stomach) intact, lowering the chance of DUMPING SYNDROME and other side effects connected to other WLS methods

The BPD part of the surgery rearranges the intestine so that bile and pancreatic fluids are separated from the food channel.  A section of intestine is bypassed and reattached in a lower section of the digestive tract.  This limits the absorptions of calories and assists in weight loss.
