International Animal Rights Day 2004
posted 12-12-04 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
On Friday 10th December, campaigners across the country marked the 7th International Animal Rights Day by holding stalls, leafletting and candlelit vigils outside labs, factory farms, butchers etc. Campaigners in the Midlands were busy at various events. Members of Solihull Animal Aid held a street stall in Solihull`s Mell Square and also a candlelit vigil outside a notorious chicken farm in Tanworth in Arden. Coventry Animal Alliance also held a vigil and leafletting outside Sainburys in Coventry City Centre.
Can animals suffer? Of course they can. The human race has long recognised that it is wrong to mistreat animals. Like us, they experience pleasure and pain, happiness and distress. Logic dictates that if we recognise that cruelty to animals is wrong, then animals should have the right to protection. Yet millions of animals are vivisected in cruel, crude laboratory experiments. They are pushed to breaking point to provide cheap fur, meat, eggs and dairy products. They are incarcerated in zoos and forced to perform in circuses. Now, with GM, even their blueprint for life is being perverted. It`s no exageration to say that animals today are abused in ways never previously imagined. It`s time to say - "enough is enough". |

After the nightmare of the Nazi genocide, on 10th December 1948 the United Nations ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR). This enshrined the principle that all human beings - however poor or powerless, whatever their colour, gender, beliefs or mental capacities - have rights that no-one, no matter how powerful, may abuse or take away. But, given that we are related to other animals, how can it be right to torture and murder them? To deny respect for animals is no better than being racist or sexist. The 10th December 2048 will mark one hundred years of the UDHR: in 1998, fifty years after that first declaration, Uncaged launched a campaign for a Universal Declaration of Animal Rights by that day. |
