Who are Huntingdon Life Sciences?
![]() |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) is Europe’s largest contract animal testing laboratory. They`re based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, with another lab near Eye in Suffolk and another in New Jersey, America. They have about 70,000 animals on site, including rabbits, cats, hamsters, horses, dogs, guinea-pigs, birds and monkeys. These animals are destined to suffer and die in cruel, useless experiments. 500 animals die every single day inside HLS laboratories. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
HLS will test anything for anybody. They carry out experiments which involve poisoning animals with household products, pesticides, drugs, herbicides, food additives, industrial chemicals and genetically modified organisms. An experiment they specialise in is called inhalation toxicology where animals are forced to breath in fumes from poisonous chemicals. They have a broad range of customers including Glaxo Smithkline, Shell and Monsanto. |

Horrific cruelty exposed
In the past few years HLS have been infiltrated and exposed by journalists, animal rights campaigners and members of the public. Every single time vicious animal cruelty, fraud, incompetence and rule breaking has been exposed on a large scale.

Channel Four filmed workers at HLS pretending to have sex with beagle puppies and shaking and punching them in the face while other workers sat around laughing. Obviously scared stiff, these young dogs were seen to urinate in fear. HLS employ a convicted sex offender. These are the kind of sick deviants who get a job in labs killing animals for a living. The campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences
![]() |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty was set up in November 1999. SHAC campaigns legally and peacefully against the suffering at HLS by targetting their financial backers, suppliers, customers etc. No company is happy to be exposed as dealing with animal abusers, so dozens of these companies have severed their links with the lab! This has caused HLS`s shareprice to plummet, their losses have gone through the roof and the government have now had to step in to provide essential services they can`t get elsewhere! Animal suffering goes hand in hand with animal testing. The cruelty will continue for as long as HLS remains open so SHAC campaign for the closure of the company and for common sense, effective methods of product testing to be implemented, as many companies already do. |

|||||||||||||||||||||||||
West Midlands Animal Action hold regular demonstrations against HLS customers and suppliers here in the Midlands. There are also weekly minibus trips to the demos at the gates of HLS on Wednesday afternoons. See our regular events page for more details. The SHAC campaign is on course for the biggest ever victory in animal rights history. More support is always welcomed to help them achieve this, so if you`d like to get involved there`s something for eveyone to do. If you can offer as little as an hour a month to write letters, send email, help fundraise, leaflet or demonstrate then please contact the campaign.
