M & S factory farmed duck demo in Solihull
On Saturday Viva! supporters held protests outside dozens of Marks & Spencer stores up and down the country. M & S state “Our customers have the right to expect that any animals involved in the production of Marks & Spencer food items are treated with respect.” Yet when Viva visited a farm that supplies M & S they filmed ducks in the most appalling conditions.
In Mell Square, Solihull, 10 protesters from Solihull Animal Aid handed out several hundred leaflets and waved placards informing the public of the cruelty involved in factory farming ducks. Despite showers & gales, dozens of people stopped to sign the petition and offer donations towards the campaign. The demo lasted over 2 hours.
20 million ducks were slaughtered in the UK last year. These birds are farmed in stinking, windowless sheds where some can hardly walk and drag themselves around with their wings! In disease ridden sheds like those pictured here, birds are constantly losing their battle for life and the floors are scattered with corpses. In the wild, these birds would swim, eat, dive, clean and play in the water but these birds will never have access to water!
Viva! are calling upon M & S to cease the sale of all factory farmed ducks and these days of action will continue until that goal is achieved. For more information about this campaign and all the great work Viva! are involved in, click on the link below to their website.
