World Day 2004 in Cambridge | |||||||||||||||
A coach load of protesters travelled from Redditch, Birmingham and Coventry to Cambridge on Saturday for the World Day for Lab Animals event. There we met well over 1,000 other protesters ready to voice their disgust about Huntingdon Life Sciences. A large marquee on Parkers Piece contained stalls from assorted campaigning groups and sanctuaries. Vegan food was on sale throughout the day courtesy of Veggies. Everyone had plenty of time to explore all the cruelty-free goodies before listening to speeches from various people including Dr Jerry Vlasak, an american trauma surgeon who used to test on animals himself but now campaigns against vivisection. |

At about 2.30, the march set off around the city streets. Many 1,000`s of leaflets were handed out to the general public and the noise from chanting, whistles and horns was deafening! The march came to a standstill outside the University animal labs in Downing Street where another inspirational speech was given and there was a minutes silence in memory of all the animals who have suffered and died in laboratories. Nearly 2 hours after setting off the march arrived back at Parkers Piece where more speeches were heard including a 14 year old activist called Luke who joined his first demo last World Day and now organises his own demos in Leeds! |

There`s no doubt that huge events like this are fantastic at encouraging new people to get involved with the campaign. Countless people who saw the march coming past them, joined in and ended up at Parkers Piece where they listened to the speeches and took literature off the stalls. The day was a huge success and everyone went away determined to step up protests against customers, suppliers etc in their own towns & cities and keep the pressure on until HLS are forced to close down! |
