I. Piano Instruction

List of 7 items

Michelle shared her knowledge of the Latin Montumo patterns of improvisation with us.
The pattern is 8 beats long and is a series of on and off the beat notes. The pattern goes from the I-ii-V43-ii- I, and so repeats.
It can be played in parallel motion, with both hands, or it can be divided up to play the root in the left hand, and both of the upper notes in the right
hand.

The piano lab in Dalton allowed us to all have a chance to practice the new skill. She demonstrated the pattern for us and we were able to practice it on
our own. Some individuals were able to pair up to have one person improvise and the other play the Montumo pattern.
The pattern was taught in C major but can be done in any major key.
Any improvisation should begin with chord tones but can go to adding in some non chord tones at times.
It is also possible to play a different chord in each hand, in order to add some variety to the music.

II. Guitar Instruction
A Louie shared some knowledge with us on guitar playing techniques.

List of 6 items
He first went over the concept of palm muting, in which the player plays a bar chord in the upper three strings and strums that- for the first two beats
then moves all fingers across the strings so there is no sound.
Many rhythm patterns can be played with the muted sound. If the chord is played on beat one the pattern can work for keeping a beat for an improvisation-
or many other therapeutic techniques.

He also went over a hard- rock・style using drop D tuning.
Also, using open tuning can mean immediate success to a client who is not able to place his/her hands in a chord position on the frets. This process is
tuning the whole guitar to play a chord without playing any chord positions. Open position is a D chord open position with all fingers barring fret 3 is
a G chord and open position with all fingers barring fret 5 is an A chord.

It is possible to use a slide- or anything that is round, tubular, and can cover the fret and slide it to different frets. This works particularly well
for clients who do not have very prolific use of their hands- such as clients with William痴 Syndrome.

The last technique he went over was 徒arate chopping・the strings for an immediate stopping of sound. Play the chord and use the side of the right hand
to hit the strings as if to karate chop them. Be careful to not do this with too much force. This technique is used in the song 的 Want Something Else・o:p>
by Third Eye Blind.

IV. SMTA Bulletin Board

List of 4 items

For those who are unfamiliar with the location of the SMTA Bulletin board- it is in the practice wing between the 1500 and 1700 practice rooms. It is right
by the voice area boards and the SAI, Phi Mu Alpha boards, and across from the instrument locker room.

Darlene is planning to do a that is Music Therapy・Theme on the SMTA Board.
She is asking everyone in SMTA- and therapy majors that are not in SMTA to send your definition of Music Therapy to her email
or the SMTA email
(smtawmu@yahoo.com)
by Next Friday (February 5, 2005)

She is going to compile each of these definitions and put one composite definition of the term on the board.
