More Reasons I Am So Bitter Lately Spring 2001 Well, so the job market sucks right now, at least in my industry. And while freelancing is fun, it doesn't always pay the bills, so I have had to suck it up and look for just about any job I can find that is decent and stable. I feel that my choices are limited. We creative types, at least this creative type, don't always mesh well into just any industry. And while we can just try to get in and learn, the price is that of an entry-level position with a much lower salary, and that is not always an option. For me that's not an option. I have worked for quite a few years as a professional and am used to earning a good salary. Based on my needs and expenses, I can only go so low. And also, I didn't bust my ass in college to earn eight bucks an hour. Call it stubborn pride if you will. But if I go down now, I'll never get back up. So I try to be realistic about my skills and how I can apply them somewhere else. My choices come down to either retail or administrative work. Forget retail. I did it for three years in high school and then for another year in college. It is miserable work. I am too moody to be nice all day to stupid, bitchy people, and I can't deal with neurotic managers. So fuck that. Now admin work, that I can do. I have worked in small places where I've had to do office work. I'm professional. I can answer phones, be pleasant, take messages. I can make copies, file, make travel arrangements. And I can obviously use a computer. So I think, ok, here I can earn some decent money, even if it's lower than what I'm used to. Here there is room to be busy, be around people, use some of my skills, and if I'm lucky, end up in a stable place. Well, guess what? No fucking body wants me. Offices that only give out a fax number don't bother to call back. I spoke to two agencies that specialize in admin positions, and they both said the same two things: first, I am over-qualified. Over fucking qualified. Now I ask you, how the hell can that be a bad thing? Do they specifically want someone who is not as sharp, as smart, not as skilled? And the real doozy: I don't specifically have admin experience, so of what value am I to someone looking for an admin assistant? Hello?? Could the value be that I just might be a good enough candidate for the simple reason that I am college-educated, have sufficient work experience, and it goes to follow that if this is the case, then I can certainly operate a stupid copy machine, a stupid fax machine, and I can most certainly take a fucking message and type out a fucking letter?!?!?!? Sorry folks, the frustration is wearing me thin. I can't seem to get a steady job doing what I love to do (write, edit, produce, TV, Internet, whatever), and I am pissed that I can't even get a job doing things I can do, nevermind whether I would even enjoy it. And believe me, I would not enjoy office work, but at least I can efficiently do it! So what am I to do? I am pretty near sick of all of this. |
