Wednesday Night Golf League
Match Play Tournament
FORM OF PLAY. This is an individual match play competition (no teams). Total score does not count in this format. The winner of each match will be the player who wins the most individual holes in a 9-hole match. .
ENTRY. Entry into the tournament is strictly voluntary. A tournament fee of five dollars per person is required to enter the tournament. Entrants must notify the Commissioner on or before July 25 of their intention to enter the tournament. Entrants will be expected to honor the commitment to play all matches necessary as they progress through the tournament.
PAIRINGS. A tournament bracket
(single elimination) will be created for this tournament. All players which have played at least 1 round
during the current season in the Wednesday Night Golf League are
eligible. The lowest WNGL
handicap for the year will be used to seed players in the tournament
bracket. Byes may be given to higher
seeded players in the first round.
Pairings will be grouped in foursomes to speed up play. Pairings will be given an Order of Start for
Wednesday beginning at
PLAYING TIMES. Players will play their assigned match on Wednesday at Verdae Greens Golf Course.
DATES OF THE TOURNAMENT. This tournament will start on a Wednesday in August while some teams are playing in the WNGL Championship Match. Players not in the Championship will play their Round One matches. All other Round One matches must be completed by the end of the next Wednesday. All subsequent rounds must be completed by the end of each successive Wednesday. In case of rain, regular WNGL weather rules apply.
HANDICAP ALLOWANCES. The lowest WNGL Handicap for the year will be used throughout this tournament (no adjustments after each round played). The higher-handicapped player will be allowed the full difference between the handicaps of the two players. Strokes will be assigned based on the difficulty of the hole. Examples: If a 10-handicapped player is matched against a 13-handicapped player, the 13-handicapped player receives 3 strokes for the match (one stroke on each of the three most difficult holes). Also, if a 3-handicapped player is matched against a 25-handicapped player, the 25-handicapped player receives 22 strokes for the match (three strokes on each of the four most difficult holes and two strokes on all other holes).
RULES. All USGA rules modified by local rules and USGA Match Play rules will apply.
a. The general penalty for a breach of a rule is loss of the hole.
b. Disputes must be settled before going to the next tee or if on the last hole, before leaving the green.
c. A hole or match can be conceded any time prior to the conclusion of the hole or match. Concession of a stroke, hole or match may not be declined or withdrawn once the offer has been made. A player can continue and play out the hole even after conceding if he wishes.
d. There are no maximum strokes for any hole. Play must continue until the hole is conceded or won outright.
e. Order of Play: USGA Rule 10 - The honor at the first tee shall be decided by lot (flip a coin). The player who wins a hole shall take the honor at the next tee. If a hole has been halved, the player who had the honor at the previous tee shall retain it. When balls are in play, the ball farthest from the hole shall be played first (eg, if a player is on the green 6 feet from the hole and his competitor is off the green 4 feet from the hole, the player on the green shall play first). If balls are equidistant from the hole, the ball to be played first should be decided by lot (flip a coin).
f. Agreement to Waive Rules. USGA Rule 1.3 - Players shall not agree to exclude the operation of any Rule or to waive any penalty incurred. Failure to abide by the Agreement will result in disqualification of competitors concerned.
SCORING. The player who holes the ball with the fewest strokes minus any handicap strokes wins a hole. The match is over when a player is leading by more holes than there are holes remaining to be played. Even though a match may be over before the last hole, make sure to get your money’s worth and play the full nine holes. Completed scorecards must be signed and dated by each player and turned into the Commissioner after completing play.
TIES. A match that ends all square (tied) should be played off hole-by-hole until one player wins a hole. The playoff should start on the hole where the match began, if possible. Alternate playoff holes can be used if both players agree. Handicap strokes will be assigned as they were during the first nine holes.
