Interview with Pax Satana, March 10, 2006 for the Wind of Ages

Hails how are all of you?

All: We are all doing fine.

Excellent, let's get right to the point. Tell me about your band, Pax Satana.

Ryan: The band started back in 2002 as Baphomet, with Justin, Ed, myself founding it, and two others playing guitar. A year or so later, after Matt, our old lead guitarist moved to Florida, the band had to make a change. We had recuited a new lead guitarist Roman, who wanted to play a more "Folkish" style, while the three founding members wanted to keep it raw and grim. In 2004, we were known as Laid to Rest, playing Folk Black Metal with no keys. After some internal strife we were once again without a guitarist, only this time we did not have either rhythm or lead. This lead to the advent of Pax Satana. In November 2004 we had returned. With new guitarist Rose, and keyboardist Danielle, we got right down to buisness. After our first show we knew there was something missing. That was a lead guitarist, Cory. Cory qucikly adapted to our style and our rise began. Sadly though, almost a year later our band went into a short hiatus and Cory left the band disgraced with the lack of work. Shortly after though, we recruited our close friend Craig. He brings a new and more grim sound to our music and look foward to releasing our new material.

Are there any specific influences that the band has, or it is pretty much just its own, independent music?

Ryan: I have been influenced by the masters of eastern Black Metal Lucifugum, Sargeist and Moonblood.

Craig: My infuences range widely, and include Ulver, Shining, Silencer, Celtic Frost, Venom, Bathory, Amebix

Danielle: First I would have to say Nokturnal Mortum, Anorexia Nervosa, and Dub Buk.

Justin: The kings of grimness Darkthone, old Dimmu (for all tid), Tidfall, and Graveworm.

Ed: I personally draw my infuence from bands such as Sigh, Mystic Forest, Watain, and Forest of Fog.

What influenced the band to start playing such music? From what I have heard, the band leans over to the Raw Black Metal side, with keyboards of course.

Ed: I don't think there is any specific influence. It's all of our styles combined, and whatever sounds good, that's what we play.

Who are the members? What do they play? How long have they been playing for?

Ryan: I'm a drummer. I've been playing since I was 13 which was back in 98. I didn't play metal for another few years though.

Craig: I play Guitar, I bought my first one at 13 but didn't really start playing until I was 14.

Ed: I've been singing for most of my life. Not Black Metal, of course, which I didn't start until 2001.

Danielle: I've been playing keys for a couple of years now since I was 16.

Justin: I started playing bass back in 2002, which was when I stopped playing guitar.

What are your personal favorite genres of music?

Ryan: First and foremost Black Metal, along with death, grind, Folk, classical and industrial.

Ed: Black Metal would have to be number one, followed by classical Baroque, jazz, funk, blues, trance and one can never forget classic rock.

Craig: Doom, Black Metal, Ambient, some Gothic stuff, Folk, and Thrash.

Danielle: Black metal...obviously. Industrial, Grind and Death Metal. :)

How long has the band been together for?

Ryan: Justin, Ed and myself founded the band back in 2002. Everyone else came in good time.

Does Pax Satana have any demo's out? If so, can you name the title of the demo, as well as some tracks and explain the story behind them?

Ryan: We have a demo called, Demo 2005. The recording was done live and in one day. Even though the quality and mastering weren't so great it's still something. It has four tracks Take me, Ancient Race, Ethereal Winds (whisper my name), and the End of Days.
     ?
?Ed: Take me is the tale of a warship traveling the stormy seas and are prepared to face their deaths, asking the Father Satan to take them. Ancient race was somewhat inspired by the tale of the Necronomicion's "Ancient Ones", telling about their return. Ethereal winds is about the power of the supernatural filling the warrior with fury and life. The end of days is pretty self explanitory, telling the  story of an apocolypse.

How does it feel to be interviewed by a 'zine?

All: It is an honor.

Any last and final words for the fans?

All: Fuck Rose.

Thanks for your time! Heilsa!
