Interview with Balrog for Wind of Ages Web'zine
Heils, Balrog, how are you comrade? I'm doing quite well, Wiatr, thank you for asking. Things are going well here indeed. Sounds great, so let's talk about Schattenmond. What kind of music do you play? I play what I would call Ambient National Socialist Black Metal. My first release did not really reflect this as well as I would have hoped, but the material that I am putting together now, cannot be described any other way. How many members are in Schattenmond? Ever needed any extra help when it comes to writing music? At first it was just me, and I managed to put together three songs as a demo (without any bass work). At the time I asked Drifason (from the band Drifason, and other musical side projects) to play session bass for me. A lot came up and he just could not get around to recording anything, it was not his fault, and he told me to just release the demo anyway. About a month later, I asked Drifason if he would become a full time member and he accepted. Now Schattenmond is a two-man band, and Drifason has much more time to help now. His ideas blended with mine are really going to create masterpieces, Drifason is a brilliant musician. Our next release will be a full album. How long has the band been together? Ever went through any rough times when it comes to members, practice, etc? I created Schattenmond in the autumn of 2005 by myself and Drifason joined in early 2006. Drifason and I live an incredible distance away from each other and there is no way we can practice or rehearse, so it proves quite challenging to get things done sometimes. But luckily Drifason and I have pretty much the same musical tastes, so we usually agree on how things should be done, even though his way of doing things are quite different than mine, but definitely in a good way. I always wondered how a basically one-man-band gets all the material down as one person. How long does that usually take? For me it takes an incredibly long time to come up with anything good. Im one of those types that is not really satisfied easily. For example, after I released the demo, I hated the song Krieg Nebel, which is the second song on there. I just think it sounds horrible, and I wish I would have redone it the way Im doing things now. The songs that I am writing now will not be done for a very long time. What influenced you to play such music? What set your ideals to what they are now? It was really my belief in Asatru, and taste for Black Metal that made me want to play what I play now. A deep relfection on what I believe led me to also believe in National Socialism. And then obviously I was attracted to National Socialist Black Metal. The point of it to me is to encourage our Heathen brothers and sisters to bring into the light to the rest of the Aryan people what a mess they are in, and what degrading lifestyles are being followed, especially by the youth, and to realize who we are, and who our ancestors are. The concept of Blood and Soil is so important and it is being neglected in todays world. To me National Socialist Black Metal also wages war on those who oppose the freedom of the Aryan people. We are the race of the Gods, the race created by Wotan to be worthy of Valhalla. We are a Wotansvolk. I cannot stress the importance of it enough, and it is one of the reasons I created Schattenmond. When it comes to influences, what bands have influenced you to play such music? Bands that really captured my interest were Burzum and Velvet Cacoon. I do not agree with all of Velvet Cacoons views, but their music is genius. Burzum has most always been one of my favorites. I cannot stand any of the whole Satanic bullshit, and I think it is only for low life scum (Some older Burzum seemed to lean in that direction and I did not like it that much). I also was inspired by a lot of classical music. Also, I really liked the music of Forest and Branikald, I think it is some of the best NSBM I have heard. I am also influenced by nature, especially winter, frost, night, and forests. What is your discography, if available? Can you give a small history behind the titles as well as the choosing of the name for a demo? My demo is called Winterhymnen. I was going to be interviewed by Yggdrasil Zine and they asked me if my demo had a name, or if it was simply Demo 2006. I did not want my first release to be simply called Demo 2006 that would be just stupid (on my part). The guy wanted an answer right away, and I was sitting at my computer thinking, and then I finally thought of it. The songs are all influenced by winter anyway, so that works. I will go through them briefly: Frosthammer- Simply because the song was about winter and the war that I am waging on the enemies of the Aryan people. Krieg Nebel- In English it means War Fog, and I called it that because this song is about the fight of the Aryan people Im Reich Des Ewigen Winters- In English this means In the Realm of Eternal Winter. I called it this, because the lyrics are about Ragnarok, and my being one with the Gods and Nature. For the musical part, I was inspired by a thought of a forest of eternal winter and silence. Do you have any merchandise available for purchase? If so, then where can the viewers find some? I regret that I do not have any available; perhaps after the next release I will see if I can get some merchandise out there. Any last words for the readers? Thank you for this interview, I hope it was informative. Thank you all of you who support Schattenmond and NSBM. Wotan mit uns! Thanks comrade for your time!
