Lon harper shot and killed Jeff Faulconer in a fight over Gustavas.
Jeff hit Sidney in the head with a hammer , so self defense.

Lon changed his name to White and left the state. Also Lon harper had a black man and his wife killed because they had witnessed a murder. Carlton's sister Peggy, is not sure who was killed or who killed them. Peggy does remember Sidney and Lon visiting her mom and dad in either Frederick or Snider, Qkla.  She believes it was about the time Sid killed someone.

Carlton  has some very interesting stories told by his father about Minnie Rose and her father who was a doctor and the doctors days in college and trapping for fur in the mountains being captured by indians .
Bad Bad Boys: Harper Brother's
My Aunt Evelyn Harper-Nutt and Uncle Rubon Nutt
had always said those Harper boys were noth'n but trouble.
Aunt Evelyn's only brother, my dad, was always getting
into trouble. He did join the Army/Airforce in 1942 and 1946 and went  to war for his country during WWII. When he came home he was a changed man. He was no longer the loving father and husband who loved to tell us stories and always joking and making people laugh. Chess L Harper would stay at home for a week or so, then leave (sometimes for months).
While he was away in the war mom was working and trying to raise their children. Then he would come home, get restless and leave again. By 1948 dad and mom had three children and no money. We traveled from one fruit camp to another. Dad tried many different jobs (including farm work).

The last time he dissapeared in 1951, we knew it was for good. Mom was now supporting five children on her own (with one on the way). We had no money and no home. Mom took us children with her as she worked in the fields and picked tomatotes, apples, prunes, etc. Grandpa Marvin told us dad had remarried a several times during these years and was still on the road.
I never saw my father again until I was grown and had children of my own (1968) and then only for a very short visit. He was gone again! After many years of looking I found him again in 1992. He was ill and had very little memory of his family or anything. But we had a pretty good five years before he passed away in 1997. I will always treasure our dance together ("Walze Accros Texas") and his wonderful poems.
