Generation No. 2

1.  Charles Lee6 Harper (Charles Rose5, Jacob4, George3, Jacob2, Nicholas1) was born 8 August 1857 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, and died 15 September 1928 in Knox City, Knox, Texas.  He married Francis "Fanny" Roberta Gause 30 September 1888 in Hunt County, Texas.

Notes for Charles Lee Harper:
Frances (Sullivan) Dunbar, granddaughter of Maud Harper Dellis (sister to Charles L. Harper) writes that family tradition states that Charlie owned a saloon.  He and a man got crossways about something, got in a fight and Charlie shot & killed him.  Charlie's parents sent "the boys" to the "Nations" (Oklahoma) until things quieted down.  The saloon was closed down.  A man went to the house and wanted to buy it.  He talked with Susan (Charlie's mother) and she GAVE it to him.  Charlie never said a word to his mother about giving it away!
Documenting this family story is a notation from Doug Harper that a Harper correspondent wrote him that she found where a Charles Harper murdered Eli Watts in Collin Co., TX.

The following information was taken from page 276 of "A Diamond Jubilee" History of Tillman County 1901-1976:  Sometime after the Harpers were married, they lived in Mexia, Limestone, Texas.  They left Mexia on Christmas Day in 1900, travelling by wagon, and arrived in Vernon, Wilbarger, Texas late the following February (1901).  The Harper family moved to one mile north of Vernon, Texas, and a year later, in March, Crossed at Doan's Crossing into Oklahoma, where they settled near White's Lake.  The Harper family lived in a tent until the tent rotted; then they lived in a half-dugout with one room for sleeping and living quarters and a separate building for cooking.  The family moved two miles south and two miles west of Frederick in 1908.
