| This was my short story on why he had to change his name and mislead the Census Takers: | ||||
| I guess there are a few things you should know about Alfred Henry Roberts (in order to find him and his parents in a census record. First, my mother has an old photo of him and his first wife and little girl. She had to be born about 1917 because she died in an auto accident about 1921 (at about 5 yrs old). In 1921 Afred Henry ROBERTS had a son, and mom says he was Alfred Henry Roberts, Jr. (he lived in San Francisco). The story was that the ex-wife had a lover and Grandpa left her about two months after the baby was born. He never looked back, and he switched his name around. He did not want her to find him. He may told the census people he was born in Colorado (because that is where Elsie Mable Crosby was born). He said he did not want to send her money to spend on other men. His mother Sara Robbins said he was born in Lodi, California on 31 DEC 1880. We found a Sara Robbins in census records in 1880 in Sonoma Co., CA (I think it was her......not sure). Yes, Grandpa had a couple different store/stations and the first "Eatery" along the beach in Sequim, WA where their last two children were born. She had been devorced and left with 3 children. Her ex-husband was George Uhrich and they had 3 kids (about 14 years earlier). Wonder if Henry Roberts had always lived in the Stockton area (in his younger years)? Barbara McMahon, from the Amador County list sent me the news paper clippings and this memo today: Now I am confused about that middle name, was it Albert (could NOT Be)? The news paper says Henry Albert Roberts!!! Sharon Kisor from Roberts-L@rootsweb.com sent us census information and has been a great help piecing this together. |
