COLLECTION of JOHN CONNORS


Trooper Tags are every type of passenger, government service or specially worded license plates ever used on state trooper vehicles. In 1990, I published a book titled "TROOPER TAGS", a study of the history of state trooper license plates. Shown below are one plate per state from my collection together with brief information about each. I am always looking for unusual plates and older plates such as those from the WWII era and before.

Alabama ALABAMA . (c1979/c1982) Alabama State Trooper, Used by Sgt. Jim Collins, one of the most famous police pistol marksmen in U.S. history.
Alaska ALASKA . 1953 Alaska Highway Patrol, plate run on Buick patrol cars.
Arizona ARIZONA . 1937 Arizona Highway Patrol. < H > = highway department. The black on copper plate colors matched their patrol cars.
Arkansas ARKANSAS . (late 1950s/late 1960s) Arkansas State Police. Worded plate.
California CALIFORNIA . (1956 base) California Highway Patrol, special project license plate. < E > = State owned vehicle. Experimental plate run on highway patrol cars to test reflectorized sheeting for general public use.
Colorado COLORADO . (1983/1985) Colorado State Patrol. Government motorcycle. The "09" was a state auditor's computer code for CSP motorcycles.
Connecticut CONNECTICUT . (1930s/1950s) Connecticut State Police. Cruiser plate. Flat- tened restamped passenger plate. See cover of Saturday Evening Post, March 24, 1945.
Delaware DELAWARE . (c1950s/c1962) Delaware State Police, 1st type Front plate.
Florida FLORIDA . 1944 Florida Highway Patrol, "FHP" Department coded motorcycle.
Georgia GEORGIA . 1970 Georgia State Patrol. The < P > indicated Patrol. Department Coded Passenger plate.
Hawaii HAWAII . (1957/1959) Territory of Hawaii, Deputy High Sheriff. Government coded passenger motorcycle plate.
Idaho IDAHO . 1964 Idaho State Police, Reserved number bloc "400's".
Illinois ILLINOIS . 1968/1969 Illinois State Police. First issue of worded plates.
Indiana INDIANA . (1972/1979) Indiana State Police. Reserved number bloc government service.
Iowa IOWA . (c1940s/c1956) Iowa Highway Patrol. Worded plate. Blue stars = front plate.
Kansas KANSAS . (1973/1981-2) Kansas Highway Patrol, Reserved number bloc government service.
Kentucky KENTUCKY . 1940 Kentucky State Highway Patrol. State government service plate. Has 5 bullet holes.
Louisiana LOUISIANA . (1937/1940s) Louisiana State Police. Worded plate. First issue worded motorcycle plate.
Maine MAINE . 1937 Maine State Police.
Maryland MARYLAND . (1935/c1957) Maryland State Police, large 6¼" x 12".
Massachusetts MASSACHUSETTS . (1989/1992) Massachusetts Registry Police. Worded plate.
Michigan MICHIGAN . (1954/1955) Michigan State Police, 6"x13 5/8". University of Michigan colors.
Minnesota MINNESOTA . (1979/1981) Minnesota State Patrol, Special Project License Plate. Joint federal/state traffic law enforcement project. The 20 Minnesota State Patrol troopers kept these plates.
Mississippi MISSISSIPPI . 1955 Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, < MHP > department coded passenger plate.
Missouri MISSOURI . 1932 Missouri State Highway Patrol, 2nd issue.
Montana MONTANA . 1951 Montana Highway Patrol. Department coded passenger plate. < PX > = Patrol exempt.
Nebraska NEBRASKA . (1952/1953) Nebraska Safety Patrol, State Government Service.
Nevada NEVADA . 1969/1972) Nevada Highway Patrol, < NHP > department coded.
New NEW HAMPSHIRE . (1937/c.1950) New Hampshire State Police, 1st issue. 6 1/2" x 13 3/4" plate.
New NEW JERSEY . 1944 New Jersey Motor Vehicle Inspector, < MV > coded.

Washington WASHINGTON . 1940 Washington State Patrol, State government service plate.
West WEST VIRGINIA . West Virginia State Police. Virginia state prison made. Used briefly by Va. SP in 1933. Then used by West Va. SP from about 1937 to 1940.
Wisconsin WISCONSIN . (1939/1940+) Wisconsin State Traffic Patrol. 1st variety worded.
