My Personal Review

Well the long awaited Balto 2 gets released to the American public tomorrow. Lucky me, I work at a video rental store, so I got to see it a few days ago. I'm not sure where to begin with this one. I have a lot of quarrels with this movie, and I will list them as I go along. I sat down to watch this movie with the highest of hopes. The great minds that created Balto would surely deliver another magical movie. Sadly, as I dove into the film, I slowly began to think that perhaps the great minds did not return for the sequel.

The first thing I noticed was that Balto's chest had grown enormous. This may sound trivial, but it is part of his character. He was never as big as the other dogs, but could pull his weight nontheless. A good job was done casting voices for Jenna and Balto, but Jenna looks like she's on crack. Seriously, she's anarexic, and her eyes are huge! We then run into Boris, Balto's old friend. Whoever drew this poor goose should be severely beaten. He looks as though he was drawn by a child, and his voice is terrible. On top of this, he became surprisingly dumber. Boris was always the voice of reason, and now Aleu is correcting his grammar?

Muk & Luk then enter the picture. Good voice fr Muk, but Luk's whimpering sounded different. I also did not like the fact that they were playing hide and seek with Aleu. Something I enjoyed about Balto was that it had a sense of realism. This was taken away from Wolf Quest.

Aleu I like. She has a likeable character, and we are able to sympathize with her. Of course I did not like her grammar correcting, it again takes away from the realism.

Something I really didn't like was Aleu's "guardian mouse" I simply saw no reason for him making an appearance. I didn't like his song, either.

Maybe the thing I liked the least of all was the film's resemblance to the Lion King. Don't get me wrong, I like the Lion King, but this film almost mimics it. The three wolverines, and the three wolves closely resemble the hyena trio. The wolves for their comical (to some) aspect, and the wolverines for their more frightening side. (Can we all sing "Be Prepared"?) Then of course there's the finding out who you are, but this can also be found in Balto. Then there's the White Wolf making a second appearance. Was anyone else reminded of Mufasa? She should have remained silent.

Please don't get me wrong. This is not a bad movie, I suppose. It just didn't grab me like Balto did. Balto could be enjoyed by all ages, whereas Wolf Quest is strictly for the kiddos. Which is fine, but it's not what I'm looking for. So Balto fans I implore you do not hate me.
I will still be accepting and posting Balto 2 fan art, and I will most likely put some more images up, but let's keep the focus on the original Balto, OK?
