Trendy Londoner Will (Hugh Grant) never
met a pretty face he didn't want to date, then dump ... until Rachel (Rachel
Weisz), a smart, single mom. So smitten with Rachel, this self-absorbed
slacker is willing to give up a lifestyle of no-strings flings for a serious
romance. "She sweeps him off his feet without even trying to," says makeup
artist Katya Thomas. But when Rachel learns this commitment-phobic player
is feigning fatherhood—with a boy he's befriended—will she call a timeout?
"She's a very practical woman who has a strong sense of who she is," says
Thomas. "She's not game-playing." Even her makeup is no-fuss. "It's an
effortless but considered look," says Thomas. "Her makeup is an extension
of her personality. She's not wearing it to fool anyone."—Anna Pezik
Hair
For Rachel and Will's first encounter
at a holiday party (shown left), hair designer Graham Johnston pulled Weisz's
dark brunet tresses into a sophisticated yet casual updo. With Bumble and
Bumble Styling Lotion spritzed onto dry hair, Johnston accentuated Weisz's
natural wave using medium- and large-barrel curling irons. He then twisted
and shaped her shoulder-length locks into spirals before pinning them up
into a purposefully "just flung up" look. He finished with L'Oréal
Elnett hairspray.
Eyes
Thomas began by dabbing Calvin Klein Eye
Color Wash in Pale Gold under the highest point of the brows for a transparent
sheen, then dusting Stila eye shadow in Eden on the remaining part of the
lids as a base. She applied Shu Uemura pressed eye shadow in Olive M484
to the lower lids as well as lightly under the bottom lashes. Using a big
oval brush, she swept Stila eye shadow in Java along the creases, slightly
blending color upward at the outer edges for a "subtle cat-eye effect."
Finally, she lined the inside bottom lids with Chanel On-the-Double Eye
Crayon in Brun Glacé, before coating top and bottom lashes with
Lancôme mascara in black.
Face
"Rachel's a do it, be happy, and go and
not worry about it," kind of woman, says Thomas of Rachel's makeup routine.
"She's more likely to get out of bed and get her son off to school before
thinking about what she looks like." For a soft and dewy complexion, Thomas
prepped Weisz's skin with Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing
Lotion then applied a blend of Clinique Gentle Light Makeup in Cream Light
and a quarter amount of Elizabeth Arden Let There Be Light, a sheer reflective
lotion. Next she dabbed on Stila Convertible Color in Poppy on cheek apples
for a "healthy" flush, followed by Clinique Gentle Light powder in Glow
3 Neutral on the forehead and creases of the nose and chin, "only where
it's absolutely needed."
Lips
For a modern look, Thomas colored Weisz's
unlined lips with a burnt-rose shade, Stila Lip Polish in Luster, to contrast
her played-up eyes. "She has a full mouth so we could make it neutral and
still have it look good."
