At 10 weeks old, Tyler finally came home with us. Things were going so well for 2 or 3 weeks. He was such a happy and contented baby. He never cried and hardly made a sound at all. After 3 weeks of being home Tyler became sick with what we believed was a cold. He was making a strange noise that sounded like he was trying to cough or vomit , so he was admitted to hospital. All his blood work and tests came back saying there was nothing wrong. It was put down to a virus and we were sent home. Over the next few months the problem became worse and he began to gag on something and was having blue episodes. He was admitted to hospital several times but no one was able to figure out what the problem was. At six months, old during a hospital admission, the doctors decided to do surgey to have a look in his airways to see what was happening. We were shocked to learn he has a condition called LARYNGOMALACIA. (see link below for information). We were told he would grow out of it and we were left to deal with it. Life for all of us was becoming very fustrating. Tyler was always turning blue and all we could do was pick him up and hit his back til he came out of it. He was unable to cough, laugh, cry but he did have some speech. Last winter, Tyler developed Croup, which turned into bronchitis. He spent most of the time in hospital on oxygen. We had had enough so we found a new doctor. Dr Brown was wonderful and after assessing him, he agreed with us that something needed to be done before the next winter. Surgery was arranged for March 2001, but was cancelled as Tyler had to cope with pnuemonia. So, we are booked in again for 30th of April 2001. We are trying to keep him as healthy as we can for surgery. He will be having his adnoids removed and his larynx repaired. |
