Nikon introduced the FA in the middle of 1983 with a completely new type of exposure metering system - AMP (Automatic Multi-Pattern), a metering system that divide the scene visible in the viewfinder into five segments and surveyed them separately.  This is Nikon first multi-mode camera with program; aperture priority and shutter priority automatic modes.  Like any Nikon's top end camera the chassis is made of durable die-cast aluminium.  Two versions of the FA were available during launch - namely the Chrome and Black paint version.  However, in 1984 the "Grand Prix Executive Committee" jury in Japan voted the FA to be the best new camera of the year, hence, Nikon issued a limited edition in gold and crocodile leather finish to celebrate this (see Nikon FA Gold).
