Looking a pictures in Nick Schade's book and on the web made me think that fiberglassing the inside of the kayak would be difficult. Fortunately, I bought Ted Moores' book, "KayakCraft" . In his book he suggests leaving about six inches unfiberglassed at both ends of the boat. Using this strategy, I had no difficulty getting the cloth to lay flat and the epoxy when on easily. |
This picture looks as if there are bubbles under the fiberglass, but what you see is just the shop lights reflecting off the bottom. I ended up putting about four thin coats of epoxy on the inside rather that thicker coats. What surprised me most was the strength the inside coat added to the hull. |
So far this has been a fun project, but fiberglassing the internal seam was not pleasant. I just didn't feel I was able to seal the seam as well as I would have liked. I guess the strength will be primarily in the external seams. |
