Applying Epoxy
to
The Inside of the Kayak
Looking a pictures in Nick Schade's book and on the web made me think that fiberglassing the inside of the kayak would be difficult.  Fortunately, I bought Ted Moores' book, "KayakCraft" .  In his book he suggests leaving about six inches unfiberglassed at both ends of the boat.  Using this strategy, I had no difficulty getting the cloth to lay flat and the epoxy when on easily.
This picture looks as if there are bubbles under the fiberglass, but what you see is just the shop lights reflecting off the bottom.  I ended up putting about four thin coats of epoxy on the inside rather that thicker coats.  What surprised me most was the strength the inside coat added to the hull.
So far this has been a fun project, but fiberglassing the internal seam was not pleasant.  I just didn't feel I was able to seal the seam as well as I would have liked.  I guess the strength will be primarily in the external seams.
