Around and About

To the north, south, east and west of Little Asby are towns of unique interest .
Kirkby Stephen is the nearest town, Just 4.5 miles east from Chapel Farm, on the river Eden. You need go no further than this for your main shopping. The town has a 13th Century Church and several fine Georgian houses as well as pleasant pubs where you can eat. The town has some excellent walks and hosts a walking festival each May.
Appleby, meaning "The place of the apple" is a classic county town, 8 miles to the north of Chapel Farm, on the river Eden. It has many fine old buildings and shows little interest in change for the sake of change. The town has a late Norman castle, a partly Norman church, 17th Century almshouses and  excellent walks, including one from Little Asby via Hoff Beck.
Crosby Ravensworth, to the west, has one of the finest churches in Cumbria and should not be missed. The fells around here are ideal for a picnic and are full of interest with Roman, Iron Age and other ancient remains.
Ravenstonedale, to the south, is a beautiful wooded village, near the source of the river Lune. Birthplace of Elizabeth Gaunt, the last woman in England to be burnt at the stake (in 1685) for a political offence. She sheltered a supporter of the Duke of Monmouth.
