The AAU

Most people have forgotten about the AAU. When US Diving came into existence 25 years ago, all of diving went with them. The AAU is back as an alternative diving organization. AAU stands for the Amateur Athletic Union. It has a web site but at this time you can’t find diving listed as one of its sports. However you can check them out at their web site at http://www.aausports.org/.

For years I tried to get USD to realize that they were killing the grass roots and part time coaches like myself. For me it was a very easy decision to make the transition and with the fees as low as they are, it kept my expenses down. I can choose how involved I want to be and make decisions on what’s best for my program.

There are coaches in other states who have already hosted a summer meet. Many coaches are just looking for the certificate of insurance to present to the facility owner/operators. I believe that some 10 to 15 states have done something with the AAU already this past summer with more looking into it. Some coaches have gone with dual registration for USD and the AAU. As more people and states become involved in the AAU, diving will be part of the AAU National Program with its own National Championship. All we need to do is register 2000 divers and "viola".

The following are some of the highlights of the AAU described for youth club only, which involves 18 year olds and younger. You can however register both as and adult and youth club if so desired. Individual fees have risen this year because of the cost of skyrocketing insurance but to my surprise it was only an increase of $2.

If one wishes more information about the AAU experience, contact the National AAU Office, visit the above web site or call Stan Randall in Texas.
