Suggested Silhouette Revision 2001-2002

Rulebook Page 69 Silhouette for 401. Inward Dive Straight.

The written guide in this silhouette "Slight bend of the hip on take-off is permissible" is not consistent with the rules governing "complete or partial breaks" in form. Because of this inconsistency, this phrase should be excluded from the silhouette.

Rationale:

When judging, a bend during the straight position can be scored as either a deficient or unsatisfactory dive depending on the degree of bend. By definition straight has been determined that a bend at the hips and/or the knees is not allowed and therefore the appropriate penalty should be assessed. If this phrase were to be followed, it would give an "unfair advantage" to those divers who can not perform this dive in the position as described. This dive can and has been performed without any visible bend at the hips.

Rulebook Page 69 Silhouette for 5233 Back Dive 1 ½ SS 1 ½ Twist, Free.

Suggest dropping the word "dive" from the description. It is a Back 1½ SS 1 ½ Twist, Free.

Rationale:

By dropping the word "Dive" the description remains consistent with all of the other silhouettes on page 68 and 69. If an announcer reads the description as it is written on the silhouette, it will confuse some of the divers in that contest. That confusion has occurred in many meets over the years because various announcers add the word "dive" even when it is not in the written description.
