My Current set up is an IC-746pro 100w to a long wire.
IMy long wire is end fed with coax. It is not a dipole.
A dipole has what is called a center conductor.  The coax hooks up to the center contuctor. Mine has no center so really has no gain. What helps my signal is height above ground. You want the RF energy to radiate as close to the
horizon as possible. Point being, the higher the better.
On  a wire antenna, the RF energy does not radiate in a streight line. It radiates out the side od the antenna. My basic pattern is an inverted L so it radiates N, S, E and West. Their are what are called lobes. Lobes are an antennas main take off angle. Though I have not done a felid sttrength test yet, according to other peoples grid locators, my main  angle of radiation is 45 deg.
My favorite mode of operation is CW. It stands for Continious Wave. Its clickering on/off a wave carrier.
Itsa alot more efficiant than voise. A voice wave had peakes and lulls. A carrier wave maintains its modulaton.
I love to contest. Especially in CW. I have worked (contacted) many people in far away lands using CW. Australlia, Israel, Conway Reef, South Cook Islands, Alaska just to name a few. More to come. 73 (best regards) for now. Greg N4WO
