moon magic
For centuries magikal workings have taken place under the light of the moon. Witches, Wise Women, Druids, Priestess and Seers have coordinated their workings with the phases of the moon. What follows is a guide for performing magikal workings using the moon's phase as an adjunct for increasing a spell's potency.

NEW MOON:

DARK OF THE MOON (2-3 prior to new crescent)

At the dark of the moon, spells for diminishing negative behaviors, relationships or energies should be performed. Banishing, binding, removal of pain, injustice or intolerance should also be worked at this time.  Anything started now will take a complete moon cycle (until the moon is new again) to fully manifest.

WAXING CRESCENT (1-7 days after the new moon)

The new moon is waxing and growing. At this time of new beginnings you should plan to increase positively. Whether it is spiritual growth, commitment to a lifestyle change, attending to business matters or embarking upon a new relationship, now is the time to sow the seeds of positive energy needed to manifest your desires. This is also the time to do protection work for you, animals and others in need.

WAXING MOON (7-10 days after new moon)

This is the time for workings geared towards increase of relationships, prosperity, health and spiritual skills.

GIBBOUS MOON (10-13 days after new moon)

Now is the time to work on increasing harmony in your life, sacred balance, patience, personal growth and artistic skills.

FULL MOON:

There are two schools of thought when working with the full moon. On the one hand, some say no workings should be done upon the night of the full moon, as it is a time of slackness. The moon is neither waxing nor waning. Its energies are in perfect balance, yet at a stand still. Others say that the full moon is the time for manifesting the greatest increases in your life. I’ve provided the information for performing workings with the energy of the full moon below, you decide whether it is appropriate to work with its energies or not!

NIGHT OF THE FULL MOON:

This is the time to greatly increase energies in your life. Workings for increasing money, health, happiness, balance and fertility will be most powerful if put into action now. They will also be the most difficult to change or alter, so once you have decided to put something into motion make sure it is what you really desire!

WANING GIBBOUS (1-7 days after full moon)
Workings to diminish energies should be done now. Releasing stress, worn out thought patterns or behaviors and unhealthy relationships will be more effective if done while the moon is on the wane. Any type of cleansing, whether spiritually, emotionally or mentally should be done now.

WANING CRESCENT (7 days after full moon-dark of the moon)

This is the time of the greatest decrease. Anything you wish to be rid of in your life, debt, illness, addictive behavior, etc should be dealt with now. As this is a time of great decrease, be sure what you wish to rid of yourself is really no longer needed. Actions taken now are difficult to change. Do not use the energy of the waning crescent in anger or you will live to regret your actions!

THE 13 MOONS:

The year contains 13 moon cycles; hence the ancients divided the year into 13 pieces. This number is often seen in magickal writings and is known as sacred, but many do not know why. Well, now you know!  Our modern calendar, which is based upon 12 months, does not truly fit the cycles of a nature. The 13 moons cycles are still there, only now we have 2 full moons within one month of each year. A totally unnatural fact if you ask me!

This second full moon is known as a blue moon and is the basis for the expression “Once in a blue moon”. Essentially, once in a blue moon is once per calendar year. This moon is especially good for working towards manifesting goals.

The second time a new moon appears within a calendar month it is known as the black moon. This moon is especially powerful spiritually. Any workings done during this time will have great strength and will be hard to alter, so use this moon wisely!

The following are the names for the moons and the months in which they appear. These names are based upon the Celtic names for them. Various cultures have different names for the moons depending upon their locale and beliefs.
