NIW ENGLISC
The origins of the English language lie in the ancient cultures of what is now Northern Germany and Denmark. Over fifteen hundred years ago, the Angles, Saxons and Jutes left their continental European homeland and settled in Britain, where their already similar culture and language fused to form what we know today as English. In later centuries, however, the English language was to a great degree affected, and even replaced, by linguistic forms largely derived from Latin. The hybrid that resulted had lost much of its original Germanic flavor and character. This is the home page of the NIW ENGLISC language, also known as FOLK ENGLISC, a project designed to reconstruct a native dialect of the English language using its Anglo-Saxon roots. The project begins with the living language, the surviving elements of Old English, and goes on to reconstruct as much of the lost vocabulary as possible, but with the pronunciation it might have had if spoken today.
