Honesdale, PA's Brian Cobb picked up his first career
victory last Saturday night at the Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway. The rookie
driver rove his X-Treme Mud Release sponsored #18x to victory in the 25
lap 358 Modified feature. Defending Sportsman division champion Ralph
Mele continued to dominate that division as he won his sixth feature of
the season while defending Street Stock champion Mike Loney won his fifth
feature of the season. Current pure Stock point leader Nate Evans picked
up the win in that division while fourteen year old Davie Franek won his
second 250cc Micro Sprint feature of the season.
The 358 Modified feature came to Mike Feltenberger's green flag
with
veteran Barry White grabbing the early lead with John Leiby dropping in
behind and eventual winner Brian Cobb moving into the third position.
The battle was at the front of the pack as White was running the outside
groove while Leiby attempted to make the pass in the low groove. This
battle got a bit too close on the ninth lap as the two made contact
resulting in White getting into the backstretch wall, ending his night.
Leiby also had to restart at the rear of the field.
This incident turned the lead over to Cobb, who led the remainder
of
the event to pick up the win. Bill Reese challenged Cobb for several
laps before spinning out of the runner-up position late in the event.
The closing stages of the event saw Ed Strada Jr. challenging Cobb for
the win. Strada tried both high and low, but could not work past Cobb as
Brian took the checkered flag, triggering a huge victory lane celebration
for the first time winner. Strada crossed the line second with Bill
Grammes finishing third. Gary Griffin and Troy Weisenfluh completed the
top five. Tom Rudalavage, Jim Allen, Bobby Puckett, Tom Oleski, and
George Hildebrandt completed the top ten.
The 20 lap Sportsman feature saw a good battle between Tom Laner
Jr.
and Ralph Mele for the victory. Laner got to the front first and led the
first half of the event before Mele took over the lead with a high side
pass of Laner. Laner was able to run with Mele and kept the pressure on
Ralph all the way, but was not able to find a way past Mele. At the
checkered flag it was Mele winning by about a car length over Laner.
Larry Hendershot had his best finish of the season with a third place run
with Alex Knopka and Brad Grammes rounding out the top five. Mike
Marold, Bob Grammes, Chris Kresge, Rocky Rosetti, and Ted Stout completed
the top ten.
Mike Loney won his fifth Street Stock feature of the season in a
race that featured an exciting conclusion. A caution flag with one lap
to go closed the field up behind Loney, putting Nick Petrilak right on
his back bumper. When the green flag waved for the final restart,
Petrilak was able to get a run to the inside of Loney entering the first
turn. The two raced side by side down the backstretch almost dead even.
Loney was able to gain an advantage in the third turn and that was enough
to allow him to hold Petrilak off the rest of the way to earn the win.
Petrilak settled for second after making a strong run at Loney. Nate
Evans finished third in his first ever Street Stock start at Lake
Moc-A-Tek with Neil DiBlasi and Joe Krisovich completing the top fove.
Chuck Davis, Jerry Liford, Tom Herman, David Luff, and Adam Jones rounded
out the top ten.
Nate Evans charged from the last starting spot to pick up the win
in
the Pure Stock feature. A heat race incident regulated Evans to the tail
of the field for the start of the Pure Stock feature, but Nate was able
to charge his way through the pack to take the win and extend his point
lead. The Hop Bottom, Pa. resident won a hotly contested feature, taking
the win over Todd Houghtaling and Jim Balutis Keith Villano was the top
finishing Four Cylinder powered car in fourth with Don Leiper finishing
fifth in only his second start of the season. Ira Landrum, John Villano,
Ron Blake, Gary Schoch, and Andy Belles completed the top ten.
Lafayette, NJ's Davie Franek picked up the win in the 250cc Micro
Sprint feature. The fourteen year old second generation racer worked
hard for the win as he had plenty of talent chasing him to the checkered
flag. Both Richie Hartman and Terry Schaffer were chasing Franek, but
Davie was able to hold off all challengers to pick up the win. Hartman
crossed the line second with Schaffer finishing third. Ralph Utter Jr.
and Kevin Nolf rounded out the top five. Rich McKay, Jason Frantz, Kyle
Pickering, Kevin Horton and Darrell Cobb finished sixth through tenth
respectively.
Race fans are reminded that the annual Fireworks Show at Lake
Moc-A-Tek is scheduled for Saturday, August 11th. The fireworks will be
presented in conjunction with a full five division racing card.
