The final night of the 2001 racing season at the Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway turned out to
be a memorable one for the Kunkletown, Pa. based Grammes Racing Team. Brothers Joey
Grammes and Brad Grammes swept the top two positions in the final Sportsman feature of the
2001 season. Greg Buchannon won his first ever Lake Moc-A-Tek Street Stock feature
while Jim Balutis picked up his second Pure Stock win of the season. Richie Hartman
won his fourth of the season in 250cc Micro Sprint action.
The Sportsman feature saw the Grammes brothers swapping cars for
this event as Joey Grammes took over the driving duties in the white Slug 'n Slam
Construction sponsored #5 while brother Brad was at the controls of the orange #5J.
The luck of the draw saw Joey starting on the front row, and he made the most of
his opportunity. The 2000 Sportsman division Rookie of the Year led every lap of the
feature to pick up his first Sportsman win of the season, though Joey was a winner in 358
Modified competition earlier this season. Joey's major competition in this feature
would come from his own car with his brother behind the wheel. The two put on a show
as they battled for the top spot with Joey holding off his brother to pick up the victory.
Brian Malcolm finished third ahead of Tom Laner Jr. and Mike Mondak. Josh
Beierle, Dan Boyce, Mike VanTassel, Jim Corcoran, and Mike Loney completed the top ten
finishers.
Greg Buchannon picked up the ride in the Moore Tire Center #8 for
the evening's racing activities and proceeded to drive the car to his first career Lake
Moc-A-Tek feature win. This was the third win of the season for the Jack Zeiner
owned team, as the car has gone to victory line on two previous occasions this season with
Jack Zeiner Jr. at the wheel. For most of the race Buchannon was challenged for the
win by newcomer Mike Mills, who pressured Buchannon most of the way before mechanical
problems on the final lap allowed Chuck Davis to slip past to claim the runner-up
position. Mills croseed th line third ahead of fellow newcomer Scott Leise and Ed
Kudrako. Nick Petrilak, Tom Cilurso, Bill Rosengrant, Mick Search, and Jared Hayes
completed the top ten.
Jim Balutis came home the winner of the final Pure Stock feature
of the season. Balutis was challenged early by teenage racing sensation Michael
Lartz, who pressured Balutis for several laps, but was not able to find a way by. A
late race flat tire cost Lartz at least a runner-up finish and possibly a shot at the
victory as Balutis crossed the line to earn his second win of this his rookie season.
Gary Schoch finished second while Keith Villano and Michael Lartz both overcame
problems to finish third and fourth respectively. Eric Schmidt completed the top
five.
The final 250cc Micro Sprint feature of the season found Terry
Schaffer picking up his fourth feature win of the season aboard his RTS Chassis sponsored
#2. Schaffer advanced from deep in the field to battle Mike Keppler for the lead in
the middle stages of the event. For the second straight week Keppler suffered
mechanical failure while racing for the lead, taking him out of contention. Davie
Franek tried to make a late run at Schaffer but could not mount a challenge over the
closing laps and settled for a solid runner-up finish. Jason Frantz finished third
ahead of Ralph Utter Jr. with newcomer Jason Reminsnider rounding out the top five.
Don Colaluce, Michael Pierre, Joe Hogan, Geoff Quackenbush, and Alan Kellogg
rounded out the top ten.
